Description

(No Model.)
H. T. BASIM. SAW GUMMING AND SHARPENING MACHINE.
No. 406,079. Patented July 2, 1889 N. PETERS PlmloLlihugnphar, Washinglan. EC.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY THOMAS BASIM, OF DEUATURVILLE, OHIO.
SAW GUMMING AND SHARPENING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,079, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed January 12,1889. Serial No. 296,204. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY THOMAS BASIM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Decaturville, in the county of \Vashington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw Gumming and Sharpening Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a view of my entire machine as in operation. Fig. 2 is a top view, with a part, which is in Fig. 3, detached; and Fig 3 is the end view of parts shown in Fig. 1 and detached from Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference indicate correspon ding parts throughout the several figures.
My invention has relation to saw gumming and sharpening machines; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts constituting the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to accompanying drawings, A represents an arbor-frame in which is journaled arbor B; also on one corner of the front end of frame A is secured a handle C On the other corner of frame A is secured a curved rod D, which serves as a guide to rest against saw E, and also serves as a handle and a support for one end of fender F, the other end of fender F being secured to a pin G, which is secured to frame A.
On arbor I3, within the frame A, is secured a grooved pulley l l. 011 the outer end of arbor B and under fender F are two collars I, the inner collar being secured to the arbor B, the outer or loose collar being provided with threads to mate threads on the arbor, so as to secure between the two collars an emerywheel K.
011 the extended part of frame A is hinged plate L by means of hinges T T. To plate L is secured an upward and a downward proj ecting pin M M, on which are journaled pulleys N N, the pins M M being set at an angle to bring the pulleys N N in line with the rim of the wheels from which the power is received, as shown in Fig.
On the outer end of pins M M is pivoted clevis I, which holds pulleys N N, in position, and to which a cord or some device is fixed to hold the machine at right angles with the saw and to resist the strain of the rope R, as shown in Fig. 1, cord U resting on wheel V. In plate L is a hole 7, in which may be placed a support to plate L.
R represents an endless rope, by which power is transmitted from wheel S, as shown in Fig. 3, around N, thence over pulley ll on arbor l3, thence back around the other pulley.
N, thence back to power-wheel S, thus causing the arbor B, with the emery-wheel K, to revolve. Thus it will be seen that the operator, having hold of handle C and rod D, can raise or lower, can tip to the right or left, by means of hinges T T, or can hold in any desired position the emery-wheel K, thus enabling the operator to change the cutting or grinding point on the saw frequently to prevent heating or to shape the teeth.
My improved device maybe used on straight as well as circular saws, a left hand as well as a right, by turning the machine over and changing the arch of the fender F the opposite way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a machine for gumming and sharpening saws, the combination, with frame A, having handle (1, rod D, fender F, and hinged plate L, attached thereto, of the grinding-disk jour naled in said frame, and the pulleys, and endless rope, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the fore oing as my own Ihave hereunto allixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY THOMAS BASIM.
