UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK \VERNER AND RICHARD OEI-IMIGEN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
SAN D-BAN Dz SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,073, dated July 2, 1889.
Application tiled April 8,1889. Serial No. 306,418. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
.lle it known that we, FRANK lVERNER and RICHARD OEHnieEN, both of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvement s in Sand- Bands for Yehiele-Wheel lllubs, ot" which the following is the specification.
Our invention relates to the hubs ot' wheels ot' ordinary highway-veliieles, and its object is to provide means to prevent sand from working into the axle-boxes otl the wheels and the waste oil or grease from oozing out Of them, and it consists, generally, in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, forming part of the specification, Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a wheel-hub tilted with our improvedl sand-bands. Figs, 2, il, i, 5, 1S, and '7 are details.
In the drz'lwings, 2 the hub.
ii is the axle-box, secured in the hub inthe usual manner, and l is the axle, oi' ordinary form and material.
5 is the axle-nut, adapted to bear, preterably, against the end ot' the box 53, and to iit into a suitable recess in the end ot' the hub.
6 and 7 are the hub-lmnds, fitted, respectively, on the outer and inner ends ot the hub. They are screw-threaded on their outer surface, and are preferably provided with a series ol' points or spurs lll, which are adapted to be driven into the shoulder ll ot' the hub, and to firmly secure the band in place.
The sand-band S has a closed or solid end, and tits over and entirely closes the opening in the outer end of the hub, and its inner surface is screw-threaded to engage with and mesh with the threads on the outer surface otl the hub-band. The outer end of the sand-band o is preferably flanged or cupshaped, and is provided with a central projection or head 1;), corresponding perfectly in form and size to the nut 5, by means ot' which the sand-band 8 may be screwed and unserewed with the same wrench that is used for thc nut 5. ',lhe flanges 1.5 preferably project the same distance as the head 1.2,and serve to give an ornamental iinish to the hub. The sand-band El has its inner represents the body oi' surface similarly screw-tlireaded to engage with. the hub-band 7. The interior ot' its outer end is preferablyv flaring7 to aliford room for it to project over the axle-bed without touching it and to prevent an entrance of sand. to the shoulder Il ot the axle. In each ot' the sand-bands S and i) there preierably an annular space I5 between the end of the hub and the closed end ol' the band and the shoulder I7 ot' the band t), which serves as a receptacle for the waste oil and grease which oozes out ot' the axle-box, and which with the ordinary construction smears the end oi' the hub.
In order to easily screw and unscrew the sand-band Si, we prefer to cut into its projecting edge 'opposite rectangular notches 0r slots lt, and to shape the .handle of vehiclewrench to iit into these slots and to serve as a lever to turn it in the desired direction. A wheel-hub tit-ted with these bands is fully as ornamental as with the ordinary band, and can be slipped on or oit' the axle without moving the band Si, which nevertheless perfectly protects the shoulder ll. from contact with sand and mud. 'lhe band S is preferably either right or left threaded to correspond with the direction olf thread on the inclosed nut.
We claim as our inventionM l. In a wheel-hub, the combination, with the end hub-bainls l' and 7, having their outer surface screw-tlireaded, ol the bands 8 and il, having their inner surface screwthreaded and adapted to surround and engage with the bands f3 and 7, respectively, the band o having a closed end and the band El a `flaring and open end, and both bands formed with the recesses l5 to form waste-oil receptacles, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a wheel-hub, ol the screw-threaded bands G and 7, provided with the spurs l O, of the closed screw-threaded band S, adapted to tit upon and engage with the band if) and having the flange l) and the head Ii inclosed by said band, and the screwthreaded band i), adapted to lit upon and engage with the band 7 and provided with the shoulder VlT and the slots lli, substantially IOO described.
3. The combination, with the hub, ol the hemd 7, secured the-roto and oxterorly screwthreaded, and the band 9, interiorly threaded to t the threads of the band 7 and 'formed with an oil-space 15, and a shoulder 1.7 botwoen said space and the end of the band, the portion of the band from said shoulder outward boing flaring, substantially as `and for the purposes sot forth.
In testimony whereof we hzwehorounto sot our hands this 3d day of April, '1889.
FRANK VERNER. RICHARD OEHMIGEN.
In presence of GUST HESSE, HENRY ZIMMERMANN.
