Description
v S. BERRY.
Furnace for Evaporating Pan.
Patented Nov. 17,1863.
Inventor;
Witnesses= 3 WW MM NiTED STATES SIDNEY BERRY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE ARCHES 0R FURNACES 0F EVAPORATING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 10,399. dated November l7, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIDNEY BERRY, of Grand Rapids, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Furnaces; and I here by declare that the following is a true and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of certain devices to prevent the radiation of heat from the sides, ends, and bottom of the furnace, and confining its action to the pan in which liquids are placed for evaporation.
Figure 1 in the drawings represents a longitudinal Vertical section of my furnace. Fig. 2 represents a tranverse vertical section taken near the chimney end of the furnace.
The letter D designates the outer wall of the furnace, and is built of brick, eight inches in thickness. Inside of the wall D and six inches from it another wall, 0, is constructed, which is also eight inches in thickness. The space between D and O is covered at top with brick, and is designed for .an air-chamber. the side Walls, 0, a space, corresponding in form with that marked G, is filled with stucco made of gypsum or sulphate of lime. On the upper surface of the stucco, which is concave in form,
the inverted arch F is laid with brick, twelve inches in thickness. The arch F terminates at each end in the walls B, likewise twelve Between to prevent the escape of heat. The grate-bars e are placed transversely across the interior of the inverted arch F, allowing space beneath them for the convenient removal of cinders.
L represents the door, made double, ofplate iron, the space between the plates being filled with stucco.
K represents the chimney placed at the opposite end of the furnace from the door.
In the construction of my furnace, it will be seen that there is an extraordinary amount of non-conducting material between the fire and the external air, first, the exterior brick Wall, D, which is eight inches in thickness, next the Wall 0 0f the same thickness, the layer of stucco, from four to six inches in thickness, and the interior walls, B,twelve inches thick, with the addition of the air-chamber between D and O, which extends around the furnace, except at the door end, the whole so arranged as to reduce radiation to its minimum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The walls D and O, with the air-chamber between them, the stucco layer or filling G, and the inverted brick arch F, terminating in walls B, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as set forth. 7 r
In testimony that I acknowledge the forego ing as my own I affix my signature hereunto in the presence of two witnesses.
\ SIDNEY BERRY.
