EDWVIN A. SCHOLFIELD, OF IVESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND.
SELF-TH READING LOOM-SHUTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 405,746, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed January 24, 1888. fierial No. 261,778. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. SCHOLFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vesterly, in the county of \Vashington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Threading Loom- Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the improved combination of self-threading and tension devices for loom-shuttles, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 is a top View of a loom-shuttle provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a partial detail section taken in the line m as of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the line 0 0 of Fig. 1-. Fig. I is a detail side View showing the thread-delivering eye of the shuttle and the slit by means of which the shuttle is threaded.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the wooden frame of the shuttle, and B the spindle upon which the cop or bobbin is to be placed. The emtl of the shuttle in advance of the end of the spindle B is provided with a recess a, made from the upper side of the shuttle, and within which is placed the hook b, the said hook being preferably made of wire bent to form an eye 0, adapted to receive the screw d, by means of which the said hook is secured to the bottom of the recess a, as shown in Fig. 2. The shuttle-frame A is cut away at 6 under the point f of the hook I), to allow the thread from a cop or bobbin upon the spindle B to be readily passed under the point of the said hook. The delivering-eye g is arranged obliquely to the axis of the shuttle, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with a tubular bushing h, which may be made of any approved material, and from the top of the shuttle is made a slit 2', which passes down through the tubular bushing 71 into the deli vering-eye and connects with the recess a, within which the hook I) is placed. The recess a may in some cases be made to extend back to the point of the spindle B, as indicated by the parallel broken lines j j in Fig. 1, and in threading the shuttle the thread is brought forward from the cop or bobbin on the spindle B, and the bight of the. thread so brought forward passed under the point f of the hook, the end portion of the said thread being then passed downward through the slit 1' into the delivering-eye g, and the whole operation of threading can be thus performed with great rapidity and without letting go the end of the thread.
I also provide an improved tension device consisting of a ball 70 held in a hollowed seat m at the end of a plug n, which plug is secured in aoavity 0 bored from the under side of the shuttle, and from the central slot-opening 13, in which the spindle B is placed, to the recess a connection may be made by means of a slit g, which is made at one side of the axis of the plug 11 and center of the ball 70, whereby the thread when drawn forward through the slot (1 and passed out of the delivering-eye Q will be surely drawn to the bottom of the tension-ball k, and be then held between the bottom of the said ball and the hollowed seat m, so that when the movement of the shuttle through the shed causes the thread to be drawn from a cop or bobbin on the spindle B the said thread will be drawn under the ball, and the weight of the said ball will operate to produce a practically uniform tension upon the thread as it is drawn over the hollowed seat an under the said ball. The plug 41 may be secured in its position by means of a pin 1* passing transversely of the shuttle. I prefer to make the ball 7c of glass about the size of an ordinary playing-marble; but any other suitable material can be employed, and I make the plug n of Wood or other approved material.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the tension-ball, the hollowed plug, and the forwardly-projecting hook, of the shuttle-body provided with a slit for guidingthe threadbetween the tension-ball and its seat, and with the oblique slit which guides the thread to the delivering-eye of the shuttle, substantially as described.
EDWIN A. SGHOLFIELD.
