UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC GEORGE O. WICKERS, OF LAWRENCE, ASSIGNOR TO THE DAVIS 81; FURBER MACHINE COMPANY, OF NORTH ANDOVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
CYLINDER FOR CARDING OR OTHER MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0..404,812, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed July 30, 1888. Serial No. 281,395. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. WIoKERs, of Lawrence, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in 5 Cylinders for Carding and other Machines, of
which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
[ In another application, Serial No. 281,396, filed July 30, 1888, concurrently herewith, I have shown a cylinder wherein the. cardclothing is to be secured to nail-holding strips inserted between the adjacent lags bolted to r flanged spiders connected to the cylindershaft.
In this my present invention the metallic lags, herein shown as abutting at their sides and forming the periphery of the cylinder,
have recesses or holes either cast therein or formed by drilling, in which holes are inserted non-metallic plugs suitable to receive and hold the usual tacks or nails employed to confine the card-clothing to the periphery 2 5 of the card-cylinder.
My invention consists, essentially, in a cylinder composed of a shaft, spiders thereon, and a series of metallic lags convexed at their outer faces and placed side by side to form the periphery of the cylinder, the said lags having longitudinal ribs at their inner sides provided with projections forming pockets for the reception of the heads of fasteningbolts, whereby the said lags are confined to 5 the spider, and being provided wit-h a series of nail-receiving plugs along their edges to receive the nails employed to hold the cardclothing in place.
Figure 1, in elevation partially broken out, shows a card-cylinder embodying my invention, only one of the lags shown in said figure being fully provided with nail-holding plugs, the plugs of the other lags being omitted to avoid confusion of the drawings; Fig. 2, an 5 end elevation, partially broken out, of the cylinder shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an inner side view of one of the lags; and Figs. 4 and 5, respectively, are sections of Fig. 3 in the line as 00'.
face for the cylinder.
The shaft a has secured to it three spiders 50 b, flanged at their periphery, the said flanges having raised. projections 3, which are slotted, as at 4. The lags c, composed of metal and of convex form externally, have at their rear sides longitudinal ribs or webs, which at 5 5 intervals have projections, as 8, to constitute between them and the main body of the lag pockets for the reception of the heads 12 of bolts d, which enter the openings 4 in the flanged portions of the spiders, the said bolts receiving upon them below the said flanges suitable nuts 13, the bolts serving to confine the metallic lags to the spiders. The lags, arranged side by side, form a continuous sur- These lags, along their sides and preferably at their ends, are provided with a series of holes, in which are driven a series of nail-holding plugs, as e, to receive the tacks commonly em ployed to unite the usual card-clothing to the surface of the card-cylinder.
In the invention herein described it will be seen that the metallic convexed surface of the metal lags forms substantially the entire support for the card-clothing, and the surface on which the said clothing rests can neither shrink nor swell in use.
I claim- The herein-described cylinder, consisting, essentially, of a shaft, spiders thereon, and a series of metallic lags convexed at their outer faces and placed side by side to form the periphery of the cylinder, the said lags having longitudinal ribs at their inner sides provided with projections 8, forming pockets for the reception of the heads of fastening-bolts, whereby the said lags are confined to the spider, and being provided with a series of nail-receiving plugs along their edges to receive the nails employed to hold the cardclothing in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE O. WICKERS. WVitnesses:
CHAS. E. STILLINGs, OSCAR M. GODFREY.
