SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,740, dated J' une l'4, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM SNEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andl exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a longitudinal sectional view on `a vertical plane through the middle of my improved steam-generator, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal transverse sectional View on line ac a: in Fig. l.

My invention relates to safetyboilers or steam-generators, and it has for its object not only to provide for additional safety and absence of danger in that class of boilers, but also to economize fuel by extracting all the heat from the products of combustion before the same are finally permitted to escape through the chimney or smoke-stack.
With these obj ects. in view my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the steam-generator, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention as applied to a stationary boiler; but it is obvious that it is equally well adapted for use in locomotives or portable boilers generally.
The fire-box shown at A may be of any desired construction and adapted for any kind of f nel-such as coal, crude petroleum, natural gas, dac. It is located within the upright boiler B, so as to be surrounded by water on all sides except the bottom, and has in its top a gooseneck or curved iiue G, which carries the heat and products of combustion into the heatingchamber D. The latter is in the nature of an oblong chamber of suitable length, height, and Width, which in the case of stationary engines maybe built of brick and lined with nre-clay or other refractory material, while in the case of locomotives or portable engines the Walls of the heating-chamber D should be made of Inetal. 4
Arranged inside of the chamber D, in a line With one another, are the heaters E, which may be constructed of boiler-iron, and are by preference cylindrical in shape, reaching from the bottom to the top of chamber D. This series of cylindrical heaters E are connected to one another by pipes F, provided with cocks or valves G, for regulating or shutting off the flow of water through the series of heaters. Each heater is further provided with a diametrical flue H, so arranged as to alternate with one another-that is to say, commencing with the heater E, nearest to the fire-box, the iueII, which passes through its center from one side to the other, is located near the bot-- tom; in the heater next to this line I-I is located near the top in the heater following this fine H is again located near the bottom in a line with the bottom iue of the first heater, and so on through the entire series of heaters until the last heater is reached, the flue H of which opens up into the smoke-chainber I, from which the products of combustion are carried off through the smoke-stack J. By this arrangement itV will be seen that by making chamber D of suficient length, and placing therein a suficient number of heaters E, arranged as described, these heaters will have absorbed all the heat before the products of combustion escape into the smokechamber at the end of the series. In order to retard the progress of the products of combustion and enable the several heaters to absorb their respective quota of heat, the chamber D is divided into sub-chambers or compartments K by means of side Walls L, built up between the heaters E and the sides of chamber D, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. By this construction it Will be seen that the products of combustion can onlypass from one compartment K to another through the ilues I-I, which lead through the heaters.
I prefer to locate the feed-Water tank M on top of chamber D, so as to still further utilize the heat of saidA chamber in heating the feedwater, which is then supplied to the heaterE IOO farthest from the fire-box, by means of the feed-water pump N, in conjunction with the suction-pipe O and feedpipe P.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I. In a steam-generator, the combination of the lire-box, the upright boiler within which the same is located, the curved flue in the top of the lire-box, the oblong heating-chamber communieating` at one end with said line and at the other end with the smoke-chamber, a series of heaters located within said chamber communicating with one another by pipes and provided with diamet-rical iiues located alternately in the top and boi tom part of said hea-ters, and the side walls or partitions built up between the sides of the several heaters and the adjacent sides of the chamber within which they are placed, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

In a steam-generator, the combination ot' the lire-box, the upright boiler wilhin which the same is loeateihthe curved [lue in the top of the lire-box, the oblong` heating-chamber eon'imunicating at one end with said l'lue and at the other end with the smoke-chamber, a series of heaters located within said chamber communicating' with one another by pipes and provided with diametrieal flues located alternately in the top and bottom part of said heat ers, the side walls or partitions builtup between the sides of the several heaters and the adja cent sides of the chamber Within which they are located7 the feed-water tank on top oli' the heating-chamber, the feed-water pump, and the pipe connecting,` said pump with that one of the heaters which is located farthest from the fire-box, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
