BAKERS' OVEN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,641, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed August 24, 1888. Serial No. 283,612. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN H. MEIER, a citizen of Switzerland, resided one year last past in the United States, and declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bakers Oveii's, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in bakers ovens; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, whereby the heat of the oven maybe regulated.

Figure 1 represents a front view of a bakers oven embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal vertical sect-ion thereof on line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section thereof on line y y, Fig. 2.

Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the body'of the oven formed of brick,-stone, or other suitable material. IVithin the body is the oven proper B and fire-chamber 1, between which is a slide-valve or movable partition 2, which is fitted between guides and adapted to be moved in and out, so that the oven proper and fire-chamber may be placed in and out of communication, said valve being connected with a rod 3, whose handle 41 is at the side of the body for conveniently operating the same. Above the fire-chamber is a horizontal wall 5, in which is an opening 6, forming a communication between said chamber and a flue 7, which extends longitudinally and horizontally, and opens into a flue 8 at the discharge end of the oven, said flue 8 being in communication with the exitflue 9 of the oven. The oven B has also an exit-opening a. On the wall 5 is a valve 10, for covering and uncovering the opening 6, said valve having connected with it a rod 11, whose handle 12 is at the front of the body. In the base of the flue 8 are openings 13, having dampers 14, whose operating-rods have their handles 15 at the side of the body.

In order to strengthen the body I provide braces or brace-bars 16, which are held in place by rods 17, passing through the body and tightened by nuts 18, thus making a strong structure.

Below the grate 19of the fire-chamber or furnace are horizontal guides 20, on which is supported a plate 21, which is used when wood is employed as the fuel.

The operation is as follows: YVhen a fire is made and the oven is to be heated, the valve 2 is opened, the valve 10 closed, and the dampers 14 are opened. The products of combustion now enter the oven proper, and when the same is heated the valve 2 is closed and valve 10 opened, whereby the heat remains in the oven proper, while the products of combustion enter the flue 7, reach the flue 8, and from thence escape through the exitfiue 9. The article to be baked or roasted may now be placed. in the oven proper, the doors B of the latter then being closed and the heat confined in said oven. The heat may, however, be regulated by the dampers let when so required.

The portion of the body below the oven proper is filled with sand, stones, &c., to prevent loss of heat thereat.

Having thus described my inventi0n,what1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A bakers oven having an inner body with chamber, a fire-chamber between said inner body and outer casing or wall, and a horizontal wall above the fire-chamber and connectingsaid inner body and outer casing or wall, said horizontal wall having'an opening with valve, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A bakers oven having an inner body with chamber, a fire-chamber between said inner body and outer wall, a horizontal wall above said fire-chamber and having an opening with valve, and a channel above said inner body leading from said fire-chamber to a flue at the discharge end of the oven, said parts being combined substantially as described.

3.
