SLIDING-DOOR LOCK;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,412, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed December 4, 1888. Serial No. 292,638. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN \V. HUNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved lock; and it consists in a bolt provided with a head adapted to enter and be confined between two sliding blocks operated by means of connectingrods and double crank attached to a shaft provided with handles, which extend through the door on which the lock is attached together with certain other details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View on the line a: a; of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the knob, showing the position of the locking device. 7
To put my invention into practice, I provide two metallic blocks A and mount the same in suitable slides b on a plate 0, which is adapted to be attached to the frame (Z of a door by screws 6. On one end of each of these blocks A is formed a series of interlocking dovetailed projections f and corresponding recesses g, which, when the blocks A are brought together, cannot be separated by a lateral strain brought against or from either side of the blocks A. At the rear of each of these blocks A is a spiral spring 2', so placed as to keep the same together. Passingtransversely through the plate 0 is a' short shaft L, to which is rigidly secured a double crank Z, each end of which is separately connected by short rods m to the blocks A in a manner that when the shaft is partially revolved the blocks A will move toward or away from each other. A locking device may be attached to this shaft 7o to be operated by a key or combination. I now provide a sliding bolt 19, having an enlarged head '0, of peculiar construction, which is adapted to enter an opening 7', formed in the sides of the blocks A when the same are open, and be confined therein when the same are closed.
The lock herein shown and described is especially adapted for use on sliding doors, and the sliding bolt 1) can be fixed either to the sliding door or to the jamb or frame, as desired.
In the drawings I have illustrated the look as applied to the jamb and the sliding bolt 1) as secured to the door; but these parts can be reversed without interfering with the successful operation of the device.
To secure the bolt p between the lockingblocks A, the shaft ]t' is turned to move the links m on, so as to simultaneously move the locking-blocks away from each other, and thus separate the interlocking fingers thereof, so that the bolt-head can fit in the recess 1', provided in the contiguous opposing edges of the locking-blocks, after which the shaft 79 is reversed to force the blocks toward each other, thereby causing the fingers of the blocks to again interlock with each other and adjust the blocks upon the head of the bolt to confine the bolt between the blocks, as is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A look for sliding doors, consisting of two blocks limited to vertical movement in opposite directions on a fixed base, and having interlocking fingers formed in their opposing edges, and a recess for the reception of a bolt-head, and a headed bolt limited to endwise movement in a line at right angles to the line of movement of the blocks, substantially as and for the purpose described.
