Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. DESPAIN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DWVIGHT O. WVALLAOE, OF SAME PLACE.
CLEANSING AND POLISHING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 404,387, dated June 4, 1889.
Application filed January 21, 1889. Serial No. 297,047. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. DESPAIN, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compounds for Cleansing and Polishing WVood and Metal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the following specification.
My invention relates to an improved detergent, the object being to provide a quick, durable, reliable, and cheap means and method of cleansing and preserving all kinds of highly-finished wood-work and metallic or enameled surfaces.
I carry out my invention by the use of an improvedcompound made up of the following elements and ingredients: one and onehalf gallon of the hydrocarbon oil commonly known to the trade as Golden EngineOil, ora like amount of any other product of petroleum or hydrocarbon compound that will act as the equivalent of the Golden Engine Oil, one gallon of malt vinegar or aqueous acetic acid, six ounces of commercial muriatic acid, (hydrochloric acid,) thirty-two ounces of butter of antimony, (trichloride of antimony,) thirty-two ounces of alcohol, and two ounces of dragons-blood, (Sang ms cZm-com's.) These ingredients are thoroughly mixed togetherin any ordinary way, the dragons-blood being simply mixed with the other ingredients, no matter if a precipitate is formed by such mixture, and if such precipitate be formed it thereby enhances the scouring qualities of the compound, after which the compound is ready for use. It may be applied with a brush,
cloth, or sponge, or other suitable device.
The advantages possessed by this improved compound are as follows:
First. It thoroughly accomplishes the object for which it is used, as I have found that one table spoonful properly applied will thoroughly cleanse twenty-five square yards of soiled furniture of either hard or soft wood, or of highly-finished metallic surfaces, such as those possessed by polished gold, sil- Ver, brass, iron, or enamelin fact anythingthat has a hard surface finish.
Second. It has been found to thoroughly 5o cleanse and leave the article to which it is applied free from all imperfectionssuch as grease-spots, stains, mildew, fly-spe'cks, &c. in fact it leaves the article to which it has been applied in a state of perfection, at least as much so as when new.
Third. It preserves and protects the finish of all articles to which it is applied, filling up all indenturessuch as small checks, splits, pin-scratches, &c.
Fourth. It can be readily applied by slight muscular exertion, therefore bringing it into the category of home duties, where it may be applied by the lady of the house, servant girl, or other person.
Fifth. After the compound has been applied the surface hardens and presents a perfect finish, a high polish, and the original finish is kept in a state of perfect preservation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The herein-described cleansing and polishing compound, composed of a hydrocarbon, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, trichloride of antimony, alcohol, and dragons-blood, (Scmguts draconia) in the proportions substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aifiX' my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH I-I. DESPAIN.
