SPINDLE FOR SPINNING AND SUPPORT THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,134, dated May 28, 1889.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. TYNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Spindles for Spinning and Supports Therefor, of which the following is a specification. I
The object of this invention is to enable a spindle to accommodate itself in its rotation to an unbalanced load, so that an untrue bobbin may find its proper center of rotation.
I will first proceed to describe-my invention with reference to the drawings andafterward point out its novelty by claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a spindle, a bolster therefor, a supporting-tube, and a part of the spindle-rail of a'spinning-fram e, illustrating one example of my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations, partly in section, of two spindles, illustrating two other examples of my invention.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In all the examples of my invention represented the spindle is constructed of upper and lower members, A and B, and an intermediate member, C, consisting of a flexible pintle, the upper member, A, resembling substantially the upper part of spindles which are commonly employed in spinning-frames, and being adapted to receive a bobbin and having secured to it a whirl or driving-pulley, D, and the lower part, B, being adapted to fit a single bolster, e, which may be of any suitable construction, provided it is rigidly supported Within the supporting-tube F, in which it has no lateral movement.
In the example of my invention represented in Fig. 1 the flexible pintle-connection 0 consists of a separate piece of wire, 0, small enough to have some flexibility. The upper end, a, of this flexible piece or member 0 is fitted centrally and secured firmly within the lower part of the upper member, A, and the lower end, I), of the said flexible piece or member is fitted centrally and firmly secured to the lower member, B. The said lower member, B, is bored out above where the lower part of the piece 0 is secured within it to a size larger than the wire of which the said piece or member 0 iscomposed, to form around said wire a chamber, 1), within which the wire may bend to allow the upper member, A, of the spindle to incline to accommodate itself to an unbalanced bobbin and permit the said bobbin or load to find its true center of rotation.
In the example of my invention shown in Fig. 2 the spindle is made of two pieces only, the upper member, A, having its lower part reduced in size to form the flexible pintle or intermediate member, 0, like What is formed in the first-mentioned example by the wire 0. In the said example, Fig. 2, p the lower end of the flexible pintle O is central and firmly secured at 1) within the lower part of a bore in the member B. The upper part of the central bore of the member B is enlarged to form a chamber, a b, around the flexible pintle or member 0, to permit the flexure of said pintle or member.
The example shown in Fig. 3 only differs from that shown in Fig. 2 in that the lower member, B, is bored through, and the flexible pintle or member 0, the lower portion of which is tightly fitted and firmly secured within said lower member, is prolonged so that its end projects through the bottom of the said lower member, as shown at c, to be received in the step-bearing for the support of the spindle.
In order that the flexible pintle or mem her 0 of the spindle may not bend too far, the portion of the upper member, A, immediately above the lower member, B, is shown in Fig. 1 at (Z as somewhat enlarged and brought slightly within the bolster, so that its contact with the sides of the bolster may limit the extent of the bending.
The whirl or spindle-pulley is firmly secured at e to the upper member, A, of the spindle, and it overlaps the exterior of the supporting-tube F, and I prefer and have represented in all the examples of my invention that the center of the band-groove f of this pulley shall be below the flexible portion or member 0, that the tightness of the band on the said pulley may not pull the spindle to one side.
The pintle-connection 0 must in all cases be made sufficiently elastic to allow it, when the spindle is balanced and not subject to strain, to assume its normal straight condition in axial alignment with the members A and B.
By the constructionof the spindle as herein described I am enabled to use a very long single bolster-bearing without adding to the length of the spindle by its flexible part, and I am enabled to use a rigid or unyielding bolster and to depend entirely upon the spindle itself for the property of yielding under an unbalanced load.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a rigid bolster containing a single bearing, of a spindle composed of an upper member for receiving the bobbin, a chambered lower member which alone is fitted to the said bolster, and an intermediate member which connects the said upper and lower members and which is flexible within the said chambered lower member which is within the bolster, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination, with a spindle composed of an upper and a lower member and an intermediate flexible member, the said flexible member being connected with the lower member at or near the bottom thereof, and the lower member being chambered above said connection to permit the fiexure of the intermediate member, a single unyielding bolster-bearing, to Which only the said lower spindle member is fitted, and a whirl attached to the said upper member and overlapping the said lower member and having its bandgroove opposite the connection between the said intermediate and lower members and outside the bolster, substantially as herein described.
