Patented May 28, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN OHAMPLIN, OF CORTLAND, ILLINOIS.
VETERINARY INSTRUMENT.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,074, dated May 28, 1889. Application filed February 19, 1889. Serial No. 300.403- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN CHAMPLIN, of Cortland, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Surgical Instrument, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved surgical instrument; and Fig. 2 is an edge view.
The object of my invention, is to provide an instrument for opening the ducts of cows teats which have been stopped by an obstruction or by a stricture.
My invention consists of a lance provided with a rounded tip and having shoulders near the tip for engaging the obstruction, the said lance being mounted on a suitable handle.
The lance A, which is formed of steel hardened and tempered in the usual way, is provided with a rounded head, a, having shoulders b projecting a small distance beyond the sides of the lance. The cutting portion of the lance is made tapering, as shown,,with two cutting-edges, c c. The shanl; d of the lance is provided with a tang, e, for insertion in the handle The lance is used by inserting the rounded point into the duct of the teat and forcing the lance inward as far as necessary; then Withdrawing it. I have found in practice that this treatment effectually cures all strictures of the ducts of the teats and is a permanent remedy of hard milking.
Having thus fullydescribed my inventi0n,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved surgical instrument, consisting of a lance provided with a rounded head having shoulders projecting beyond the sides of the lance, substantially as specified.
