UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EVART, OF LAVRENOE, MASSACHUSETTS.
RAILWAY-GATE OPERATIVE MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,929, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed January l0, 1887 Serial No. 223,845. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN EWART, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railway- Gate Operative Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a vertical section of a pair of street-crossing railway-gates and their operative mechanism of my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 2 is a top View, and Fig. 3 a perspective view, of one of the gates.
Each gate of the pair, as shown at A and A is a lever, having its longer arm extending across the street to or about to the middle thereof. Sometimes but one such lever would be required, in which case it would extend nearly, if not entirely, across the-street, at or near its intersection with the railway. Each lever suitably fulcrumed so as to be capable of being turned from a horizontal into an upright position, or vice Versa, has at its fulcrum a spur-gear, a, to engage with vertical toothed racksb b', extending upward from two pistons, c c', of two barrels or cylinders, d d', arranged as shown. Each barrel d is closed at its lower end, the two barrels cl Being connected by a pipe, e. The two barrels el are also closed at their lower ends and connected by a pipe, e.
A hanger or leg, f, is pivoted to each gate to aid in supporting it in a horizontal position. The said gate I usually construct of a series of curved metallic rods, g, joined at their outer ends, and at or near their middles extended through a disk or a series of arms, h, radiating from a common center. A pair of the rods extend on each side of the gear a, and are connected to a junction-piece, k. These junction-pieces, of which there is one on each side of the wheel, are connected by abent metallic bow, l, which, abutting against the top of the next adjacent barrelor cylinder when the gate is raised to a vertical position, serves not only as a means of completing the gate, but as a stop to arrest the gate in such position.
Pipes m m lead from the barrels of one gate to and open into the lower ends of two vertical cylinders or barrels, C C', provided with pistons D D', having mechanism for reciprocating them rectilinearly within such barrels, such mechanism, as shown, bein g connectingrods 'a 'a' and two cranks, o o', with their shaft p, furnished with a cranked wheel, q.
Joining the two barrels C C at their lower ends is a pipe, r, having on it two cocks, s s. From the gate of each of these cocks a stem, f, projects upward and is provided with a spring, u., for depressing it and the gate, there being at or near the top of the stem a shoulder or button, u', which just previous to the termination of the rise of each piston will be met and forced upward by a forked arm, n, projecting from the piston-rod, its office being to open or raise the gate of the cock. On the piston descending, the gate will be depressed or closed by the spring u. A pipe, w, leads out of the pipe r between its two cocks s s', and to a vertical cylinder, provided with a weighted piston, y.
Now if we suppose the several barrels or cylinders that are provided with pistons to be charged with a liquid not freezable at ordinary winter temperatures we shall find on revolving the shaft pone way that one of the pistons D D will be caused to descend and the other simultaneously to ascend within its barrel C or C', in which case one of each pair of the racks t b will be drawn downward and the other forced upward, so as by their action on their intermediate gear to cause the gate to rise to a vertical position. By revolving the shaft in the opposite direction a counter movement of the gate or the closing of it may be effected,
The cylinder weighted piston fy, pipes tu and r, stop-cocks s s', stems t, buttons u', springs u., and forked arms o constitute an apparatus for compensating for leakage or expansion of the operative fluid of the several barrels. It will be seen that when either stopcock is open the other is closed,in which case there will be a free communication between the barrel C next such stop-cock and the cylinder m, whereby liquid from such cylinder, in case of leakage having taken place in the apparatus, will iiow into the cylinder to com pensate for the loss. In case of expansion of the liquid by heat or increase of temperature,
IOO
the excess of the liquid, on a stopcock being -opened, can How into the cylinder Whose piston under the increased pressure on it, due to the expansion of the liquid, Will-be forced upward, so as to increase the liquid-holding space Within the cylinder. Suspended from and extending doWn Within the gate is a signal or sheet, S, of Woven Wire, which in practice is to be painted of a red color, it being to enable the gate when` down to be seen to advantage.
I do not claim the combination, substantially as described, for actuating a railwayroad-crossing lever-gate, A, such combination consisting lof the gear a, its racks b b', and pistons c c and their barrels CZ d', the barrels C l', connection-pipes m fm', and pistons D D', having mechanism for reciprocating' them (the said piston s) alternately in such barre'ls C C', all being essentially as set forth, the essential features of such a combination being shown in the United States Patent No. 205,217; but
Vhat I do claim is- 1. The combination, with the gate operative mechanism, substantially as described, consisting of the gear a, its rack b b', the pistons c c', their barrels d` d', the connection-pipes mm', and the barrels C C and their pistons y D D', having mechanism for actuating them,
(the said pistons,) as explained, of the apparatus, essentially as explained, for compensating for leakage or expansion of the fluid used in such gate operative mechanism, the said apparatus consisting 'of the cylinder Weighted piston y, pipes w and r, stop-cocks
