' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARLOS LEVI SMART, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
COMPOSITORS BRACELET WRIST-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,783, dated May 21, 1889.
Application filed May 3, 1888. Serial No.272,642. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CARLOS LEVI SMART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Compositors Bracelet Vrist-Protector, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of my invention is to reduce the labor and inconvenience attending the distribution of type by hand. I accomplish this by means of the device described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents my invention in use at the case. Fig. 2 is a perpective view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a View of the bottom of the protector. tion on line lVhen a compositor is distributing type, he rests the Wrist of his left hand upon the edge of the case, in order to assist him in sustaining the Weight of the type held in that hand while distributing with the other hand. His wrist has a tendency to slip oft' from the edge of the case, and a continual strain of the muscles of the arm must be exerted to overcome that tendency. In addition to this the edge of the case hurts the wrist and the water from the Wet type runs down the wrist and wets the sleeve.
My invention consists of a soft-rubber pad oblong in form having one side fiat and provided with a roughened surface to increase the friction between the pad and the case, and having the other side concave t-o t the wrist, and being provided near one end with a broad elastic band to encircle the wrist. By plac- Fig. t is a vertical cross-secing the band B near one end of the pad the other end of the pad can be brought up against the base of the hand, while the band is below the wrist-joint. lf the band is placed at the middle of the pad, the pad must be made longer than is otherwise necessary, in order to protect the portion of the Wrist which rests upon the case-ea'. e.,the portion between the wrist-joint and the base of the hand-for the reason that otherwise the band will press upon the wrist-joint, causing discomfort and impeding the movements of the hand. It is desirable that the pad should extend back of the wrist-joint no farther than is necessary, so as not to encumber the hand and impede its movements.
The rubber pad forms a dam which prevents the Water from running down the arm. The flatsurface serves to hold the Wrist from turning, and thereby relieves the strain of the muscles required to hold the type in position.
In the drawings, A is the pad. B is the band. C is the concavity, and D represents the fiat roughened surface which is to rest upon the case.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The compositors bracelet wrist-protector set forth, comprising a soft-rubber pad oblong in form having one side flat and provided with a roughened surface, and having the other side concave to fit the wrist, and provided near one end with a broad elastic band to encircle the wrist.
CARLOS LEVI SMART.
