Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEOPOLD SANDERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
lM PROVEM ENT IN HOOP-SKI RTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,363, dated October 20, 1863.
Skeleton or Hoop Skirts, and I do hereby declare that the followingI is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of a skirt constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged view of a portion of the same; Fig. 3, a detached perspective view of a clasp pertaining to the same; Fig. 4, a section ofthe same, taken in the line a' a', Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
This invention relates to a new and improvedmeans for securing the hoops of the sk rt to the tapes, whereby a very firm and strong connection is obtained between the parts aforesaid and all shifting or moving of the same out of their proper or relative position effectually prevented.
To this end the invention consists in the employment or use of braids or cords, in connection with metallic clasps arranged and applied in the manner substantially as hereinafter set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
Arepresents the waistband of' the slirt; B, the tapes, and C the hoops. These parts may be constructed in the ordinary way and ofthe usual materials.
The hoops C are attached to the tapes B, as follows:
D represents clasps constructed of sheetmetal and provided with spurs or prongs a, which are pushed through the tapes and clinched at their inner sides, the clasps encircling the hoops, as shown in Fig. 4. The form ot' these clasps is shown clearly in Fig.
3. These clasps have each a hole, b, madein them to admit of braids or cords c being passed through them. The braids or cords are passed through the holes b, through the tapes B, around the hoops C. and back through the holes b, as shown in Fig. 4, the braids orcords being crossed from one clasp to the'one immediately above and below it, there being two clasps applied to each hoop on each tape, as shown clearly in Eig. 2. lhe braids or cords are passed through the clasps and tapes and around the hoops, and drawn tightly around the latter, and the spurs or prongs a then clinched, which binds the partsfirlnly and secures them toRK ether, effeotually preventing the hoops and tapes from shifting their position.
Braids or cords have been previously used and crossed in the same way on the tapes, as herein shown and described, but they have been simply passed through the tapes around the hoops and then back again through `the tapes, and the needle passed through the braids or cords where they first passed through the tapes, so as to secure the hoops to the tapes. Theclasps D, it is believed, form a much rmer' connection of the hoops to the tapes.
l do not claim, broadly, the employment or use ot' braids or cords crossed on the tapes and passing through the same and around the hoops, for they have been previouslyI used 5 but.,
Ewing thusdescribed my invention, what lclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The braids or cords c, in combination with the clasps D, the above parts being applied to the tapes B, and all arranged as and for the purpose herein set forth.
L. SANDERS.
