BED DRIER AND WARMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,339, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed July 5, 1888. Serial No. 279,090. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JASPER FOSSATI, of Inez, in the county of Victoria and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Bed Drier and Warmer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention .is to provide a convenient means for heating beds in cold weather and drying them in damp weather, to prevent the occupant of the bed from contracting colds.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as-hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bed warmer and drier embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a central transverse vertical section thereof.
The invention includes, primarily, a suitablev frame of essentially elliptical form, whose ends allow of the said frame being readily slipped in between the bed and bedding or between two articles of bedding, and in connection with said frame a suitable fire-pot of portable construction.
In the construction shown in the drawings the frame consists of two side members, 10 10, of essentially elliptical form, the upper parts of each side member being united to the bottom parts thereof at the ends and provided with metallic end caps, 2, which serve to strengthen the frame and ornament the same. The side members, 10, are united at the center by transverse boards or plates 11, which extend transversely between the upper and lower parts of each of said members. The upper and lower plates 11 are braced by several vertical posts, 12. (Four in the present instance.) This construction of the frame makes it strong and durable, while the elliptical form thereof admits of its being entered between the bedding with great facility.
A horizontal supporting-frame is arranged between the posts 12, for supporting a fire-pot. The said frame is preferably of skeleton form, to attain a desirable lightness, consisting of wires 13, extending radially from the posts 12 toward a common center and bent to form a substantially circular seat or support, 3, for a fire-pot, 14.
The fire-pot 14; is formed gradually larger toward the top to rest on the seat 3, and is provided with a suitable handle, 4:, and a wiregauze cover, 15. The wire-gauze cover allows of the free escape of-the heat, while preventing the bedding that may come in contact therewith from catching on fire.
In practice the fire-pot will be charged with live coals, coke, or other suitable fuel before being placed in the frame. The frame is first placed in the bed and the fire-pot then set in place. The upper and lower boards or plates 11 are each provided on the inner side with a covering of sheet iron or copper, 5, an interposed layer, 6, of asbestus or other non-conductor of heat being arranged between the said layer of sheet iron or copper and the outer board or plate, whereby the heat of the fire-pot or furnace will not detrimentally affect the said boardor plate.
The invention being of durable construction and convenient form affords a desirable article of its character, and its use will be found conducive to health by well persons as well as by invalids.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bed drier and warmer comprising an elliptical frame, in combination with a firepot support suspended within the frame between the upper and lower parts thereof, substantially as described.
2. A bed warmer and drier comprising a frame formed of elliptical side members having transverse upper and lower boards or plates, in combination with a fire-pot holder supported between the top and bottom transverse boards or plates, and a fire-pot in said holder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a bed warmer and drier, the combination, with the elliptical frame consisting of the elliptical side members united at top and bottom by transverse, boards and plates, of a fire-pot holder within the frame between its upper and lower boards, and posts interposed between said upper and lower boards to brace the same and form a support for the fire-pot holder, substantially as and for the purposes Set forth.
4. The herein-described bed Warmer and drier, consisting of the elliptical members 10, joined together at top and bottom by the boards or plates 11, in combination with the posts bracing said boards, the fire-pot holder 10 supported from said posts and having a central seat, 3, and a fire-pot, 14, having a reticulated cover, 15, and resting in said seat, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
