UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORIAN S. MEEKS, OF EVANSVILLE, AND JOHN C. BROIVN, OF EUREKA, INDIANA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,281, dated May 14, 1889. Application filed October 17, 1888. Serial No. 288,376. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ORIAN S. MEEKs and JOHN 0. BROWN, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Evansville and Enreka, in the counties of Vanderburg and Spencer and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has relation to plows, and more particularly to that class wherein an upright rigid colter is secured to the landside, and the object of the invention is to secure the colter to the landside so as to increase the life or durability and efficiency of the colter; and to these ends the novelty consists in the manner of securing said colter to the landside, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of our improved plow-point and colter; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the manner of attaching the colter to the landside.
A is the plow-point, B the landside, and O the colter.
The landside B, at a suitable distance from the point, is provided with a recess, D, the forward end, E, of which is beveled inwardly and forwardly, and forms what is known as the F female half or portion of a dovetail joint, and said beveled end E, in the vertical direction of its length, forms an acute angle with the base-line of the rear portion of the landside.
The recess D is provided with one or more bolt or rivet holes, a, by means of which the colter is secured to the landside.
The colter C has a male dovetail portion, 0, which corresponds to the forward end, E, of the recess D in the landside, and the thickness of said colter exactly corresponds to the depth of the recess D, so that the outside of the colter and the landside are in the same plane, whereby the landside presents a smooth plane or surface to the draft.
WVhen the colter is secured by a bolt or rivet, as at a, it will be seen, by reference to the dotted arcs in Fig. 2, that the dovetail joint E 0 forms a broad wedge-lock and bearing for the colter and renders said colter as rigid as though the colter and pointwere one solid piece.
The cutting-edge e of the colter is curved rearwardly, so that in operation it gives what is known asa draw cut, which is considered the most effective, and requiring less power to perform its work.
WVe are aware that it is not broadly new to secure a colter or a beveled cutter-blade to the landside of a plow-point by means of a dovetail joint, so that the landside-surface of said colter is flush with the landside of the point in front and rear of the colter, and therefore we disclaim such a device. By our invention and improvement we utilize the full width of the lower portion of the colter and make it serve as the greatest portion of the landside, thereby affording a broad wearing-surface back of the beveled shoulder or abutment c. WVe also incline the half-dovetail shoulder backward, so that it is oblique to the sole of the plow, and forms, in combination with the bolts, a positive locking device. We also afford a broadside bearing-surface, 5, extending the full width of the lower part of the colter.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
A plow having a half-dovetail abutment, c, inclined obliquely backward, and a broad vertical bearing-surface, 8, extending from said abutment to the heel of the landside, in combination with a broad-base colter beveled to interlock with said shoulder both vertically and laterally, and secured by transverse bolts to the plow, whereby the colter forms the main portion of the landside and is positively locked in its place, as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
