HENRY B. STRANAHAN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
STAMPING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,999, dated May *7, 1889.
' Application filed March 24, 1888. Serial No, 268,446. (No model.) v
To aZl whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY B. STRANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oleve= land, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamping=Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stamping-presses; and it consists in the combination of a removable stick or type holder with the press mechanism, whereby the press is made quickly interchangeable to facilitate the stamping of names and numbers on sheets of paper.
The object of my improvement is to adapt a stamping'press for lettering on maps and diagrams, enabling the operator to easily and quickly perform the work of inscribin g on that class of maps and diagrams which has heretofore been done by hand.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stamping-press embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged and detached view of the working parts of the stamping mechanism. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same, each showing the stick or type-holder detached. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent the stick or type-holder detached.
A represents a bed plate or table, which may be made of any suitable material and of any suitable dimensions for holding large sheets, as maps or diagrams. At each end of thetable or bed are fixed posts B B, supporting a double or slotted cross head or bar, 0.
D is a hanger supported in the cross-head by a screw, S, passing through the said slot in the cross-head and screwed into the flange d of the hanger, and by means of which the hanger may be shifted from end to end of the bed or table.
On the front face of the hanger are fixed ways E, into which is fitted to slide the stem F of the holder G, which holds the stick or type-holder. Above the said ways and stem is pivoted a hand-lever, I-I, bearing upon the top of a pin in the stem F. Through the hanger D is made a slot, d, through which a pin, a, attached to the stem F, protrudes.
To the said pin 2' is attached the lower end of a spring, J, whose upper end is fixed to a lug or pin, j, on the rear side of the hanger D.
The purpose of the said spring is to draw the stem F upward.
To the rear and lower side of the hanger D is attached a grooved plate, I, in which the stem is of a foot plate, K, slides. Said footplate is held up by means of a light spring, L, attached to a lug or pin, Z, on the stem is and the pin 1'. The holder G, for holding the type sticks or holders, consists of a plate, g, having a shoulder, g, and of which the stem F forms a part. To the shoulder of plate 9 is attached a second plate, 9 having rib g on its inner face.
The sticks or type-holders consist of halfboxes M, having a thumb-screw, N, in one end for fastening the type T in them. In the upper and thick portion of the stick is made a I groove, 0, into which the rib g on plate 9 fits. The said sticks or type-holders are slid into the socket from either side and are very readily inserted or removed.
The method of using this press is as follows: Supposing, for instance, the lettering of streets and avenues on a map or plat of town lots is required. The sheet having the diagram or plat laid out thereon is laid and spread out on the table under the stamping-press. Now, the name of a street having been set up and secured in the stick, said stick is inserted in the socket. Then the diagram or plat is adjusted under the foot-plate K, which serves as a guide for exactly locating the place for the lettering. Now by pressing the hand-lever the words are clearly and readily stamped upon the diagram.
With this device all the streets, names, and numbers are very uniformly and easily stamped upon a map or diagram.
The press may be shifted to either end of the table to accommodate it for stamping on or near the margin of a map or diagram, and the map or diagram may be turned and shifted also for convenience.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In combination with the hanger D, the ways E, attached thereto, the stem F, sliding in said ways, the spring J and lever H, for moving said stem in reverse directions, and the holder G, attached to said stem, and a movable foot plate, K, and its retractin spring", this plate and spring also being attractingspring Z, constructed and operating; tached to said hanger and arranged for 00- substantially as specified. Operating with the type carried by said holder,

attached to back of said hanger, and the re- C. J. SHANKLIN.
