W. H. PAGE 86 G. G. SETGHELL. DIE FOR FORMING WOOD TYPE.
No 402,851. Patented May '7. 18 89.
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
\VIIJLIAM H. PAGE AND GEORGE C. SETCHELL, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO THE WVILLIAM I-I. PAGE WOOD TYPE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DIE FOR FORMING WOOD TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,851, dated May *7, 1889. Application filed December 5, 1888. Serial No. 292,720. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, IVILLIAM H. PAGE and GEORGE O. SETOHELL, of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connectiout, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Forming 00d Type; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention relates to the manufacture of wood types by impression upon the blocks of wood of which the type are formed. In the manufacture of these type as practiced by us the wooden block is set on end, and the die is brought down upon its end, crushing in or compressing all that part of the wood surrounding the character, leaving it raised above all the other surface of the block. I'Ieretofore these blocks have been zo made larger than the finished type, as with the presses heretofore used, and with the method followed, it was necessary to leave a part to be removed to get rid of the irregular surface left on the side by the crushing in of 2 5 the fiber of the wood.
Our invention consists of an improvement in the press in respect to the parts which hold the die and are about it, whereby a block of wood of the exact dimensions of the type 0 when finished may be used, and the sides of this may be left un marred and in a finished condition.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a sectional view of that part of the press to which our invention is applied. Fig. 2 shows the face of the die in the press.
In the drawings, A represents the lower 40 part of the plunger-head. The face of it is provided with two clamping-jaws, B C, ad-
justable by means of screws which pass through ears 1) Z) and lit threaded holes tapped into the head. On the bed below is a sta- 5 tionary jaw, D, and opposite this a movable jaw, E.
The block to be impressed upon by the die is shown at F.
The jaws on the plunger have inclined lips (I, which fit into corresponding grooves in the ends of the dies or die-sections, and theends of the die rest under these lips, as at c. As heretofore used, the ends of the dies projecting under the lips were flush with the whole face of the jaw below the lip, which was bounded by the lines mm, the block also being left of the dimensions included between these two lines 00 x, and, further, the lower face of the jaw was flush with the face of the die. The block, therefore, had then no lateral support above the jaws on the bed and the sides were crushed out, and the parts of the block between the dimensions here shown and the lines 00 00, to which it then extended, had to be removed by subsequent operation. The parts which remedy this defect are the lips ff, which project under the face of the die and quite up to the lines 1 y, Fig. 2, which indicate the margin of the finished type, or to the edge of the block. These jaws, therefore, as the plunger descends, move snugly over the sides of the block in advance of the die and give it firm support on both sides. The corners g g are preferably slightly bevelled or rounded, so as to pass readily over the corners of the block. By this the type are formed complete and require no trimming.
The holder is adapted to receive the dies of several letters or forms, as shown in Fig. 2, 8o
