APPARATUS FOR PRESSING CENTERS FOR WATCHCASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 61 5,831, dated December 13,1898.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. FIELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Pressing Centers for Watchcases, of which the following is a specifica= tion.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved combination of dies with a sectional core for producing the configuration and ornamentation of the watchcase-center by pressure and in the specific construction of the ornamenting die, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the apparatus employed in carrying out my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the lower die and its holder. Fig. 3 represents an axial section showing the upper and lower dies in their working position. Fig. i represents an axial section showing the first step taken for the renewal of the pressed center-blank from the dies. Fig. 5 represents an axial section showing the second step for the removal of the center-blank. Fig. 6 represents an axial section showing the final step for the removal of the center-blank. Fig. 7 represents a top View of the spring-die for imparting the required ornamentation to the external surface of the center-blank. Fig. 8 represents a section taken in the line 8 8 of Fig. '7, showing the interior surface of the spring-die. Fig. 9 represents a view of one of the sides of the sectional core. In the drawings, A represents the die-bed, provided with a circular recess a and with a chamber 7), adapted to receive the sliding cambar B, which serves as a means for withdrawing the pressed center blank H from the dies.
The die-holder D is provided with an annular groove 0 and is arranged loosely upon the top of the die-bed, being arranged for limited up-and-down movement by means of the guides E E, each provided with an inwardlyprojecting lip d, which extends into the annular groove 0, thus preventing the upward removal of the die-holder D from the bed A. The die-holder D is provided with a central opening 6, adapted to loosely fit the cylindrical lower die F. The die F, which is adapted for sliding movement in the die-holder D, is provided at its lower side with a recess 1, adapted to receive the upper end of the hollow forcing-spindle K, which is held loosely in the central perforation 7c of the die-bed and serves, in conjunction with the cam-bar B, to raise the lower die and the die-holder from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the elevated position shown in Fig. 4, the said upward movement being caused by the action of the incline j of the cam-bar B upon the lower end of the forcing-spindle K. Within the bore Z -of the forcing-spindle K is placed the loose lifting-spindle L, which also passes loosely through the perforation m of the die F and is provided at its upper end with the enlarged head '27,. The forcing-spindle K is provided with the downwardly extending ears 4: e, which serve to prevent the said spindle from turning upon the cam-bar, and is also provided with the opening w, adapted for the passage of the inclined cam w of the cam-bar, the said cam a: serving to raise the liftingspindle L to the position shown in Fig. 6.
The upper die J is secured in any suitable manner to the plunger M of the press for upand-down movement.
The preliminary center-blank 1-1, which is first struck up in the approximate form of a watchcase-center, is placed within the springdie G, as shown in Fig. 13, and the sectional core I placed within the blank,-so as to impart the proper form to the inner surface of the same when subjected to the action of the upper and lower dies J and F. The sectional core I consists of abase 0, provided with the squared portion 1) and the screw q, and around the squared portion of the base 0 are placed the die-segments r r s s, which are covered and held in proper position by means of the nut t.
In carrying out my improved method of pressing centers for watchcases the combined spring-die G, center-blank II, and sectional core I (shown in Fig. 13) are placed within the central opening 6 of the die-holder in the position shown in Fig. 3, and when in this position the extreme pressure exerted by the dies J and F upon the opposite edges of the annular center-blank H will serve to cause the flow of the metal inwardly from the edge portions of the blank to the annular middle portion of the same, so as to produce athickening of the said middle portion to fit'the ornamenting inner surface u of the outer die G, whereby the reverse of the inner surface of the outer die will be imparted to the outer surface of the watchcase-center and at the same time the proper configuration will be imparted to the edges of the blank by the faces of the upper and lower dies J and F. Owing to the great pressure required to cause the flow of the metal from the edges to the middle portion of the blank, the spring-die G will become firmly held in the die-holder D, so as to prevent ready removal, and in order to effect the removal of the same the upper die J is first raised to an elevated position, as shown in Fig. 1, and the cam-bar B forced inward, thus causing the elevationof the die-holder D and the inclosed dies to the position shown in Fig. 4. The plate N is now placed between the upper die J and the top of the die-holder D, and While the lower die is being supported in its elevated position by the forcing-spindle K the die-holder is forced down by the downward movement of the die .I to the position shown in Fig. 5, thus freeing the spring-die G from pressure against the side of the opening 6. The plate N is now removed and the cam-bar carried farther inward, so-that the inclined cam 00 will operate against the lower end of the lifting spindle L to raise the sectional core I, spring-die G, and the pressed blank from the lower die, as shown in Fig. 6. The pressed blank may then be readily removed from the spring-die G and the core I.
The spring-die G is formed of a steel-bar having the proper impression it made on one side and bent up in circular form, with the impression it at the inner side, with a narrow slit-opening 3 at the ends of the die; but a die made in several separate sections may be employed in connection with the sectional I core and the upper and lower dies in carryfiguration on its interior surface, together with means adapted to close said ring-die upon the blank therein and to impartby such closure its configuration reversely to said blank.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of an outer die provided interiorly with an ornamenting-surface, and the sectional core, with the upper and lower dies adapted to impart the required form to the edges of the blank, and to cause the flow of the metal under pressure from the opposite edge portions of the blank to the annular middle portion, to produce a forcible thickening of the middle portion into the ornamenting inner surface of the outer die, whereby an ornamentation, the reverse of the inner surface of the outer die, will be imparted to the outer surface of the watchcase-center, by the thickening of the middle portion, substantially as. described.
2. The combination of the dieholder adapted for up-and-down movement, with the lower die adapted toslide in the die-holder, the sectional core, the outer die for imparting form to the central outer periphery of the blank,
and means for causing the upward movement of the die-holder preparatory to its succeeding downward movement and the removal of the pressed blank from the dies, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the die-holder adapted for up-and-down movement, the lower die adapted to slide in the die-holder, the sec tional core, the outer die for imparting form to the central outer periphery of the blank, and means for causing the upward movement of the die-holder preparatory to its succeeding downward movement, and means for causing the separation of the pressed blank from the lower die, substantially as described.

The combination of the segmental dies having plane sides opposite their curved sides,- and arranged so that their curved sides form a true circle, and their plane sides opposite their curved sides arranged to leave a central square aperture, a block having a central square boss adapted to fill said aperture and provided with a screw-threaded boss, and a circular nut engageable with said boss, all combined as shown, and adapted to impart shape to the interior portions of a watch-rim center, by power suitably applied externally to said blank, substantially as specified.
