DOOR-MAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,705, dated May 7, 1889.

Application filed October 26, 1885- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OTTO WESTERHOLM, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Mats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a door-mat which is especially useful in wet and wintry weather, because of its ability to cut through the caked mud, snow, or ice, and thus render it easy for a person to scrape from his feet the accumulations thereon.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a mat embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof, enlarged, on the line 2 2, Fig. 1.

Reference being had to the drawin gs, A represents the rectangular frame surrounding the mat, and having its end pieces connected by a series of longitudinal strips, a a, running parallel to the sides of the frame. The frame A and the strips a are made, preferably, of hoop-iron or sheet metal standing on edge, and are suitably connected or secured to gether, as by rivets or soldering.

Between the strips a, and between them .and the sides of the frame A, are placed the transversely-arranged strips b b, of the same material as the other strips, and secured to the strips a and the frame preferably by the rivets c. The strips 1), which are preferably bent into zigzag shape, as shown, may be secured to the strips 0 only at each alternate point of contact therewith, as shown in Fig. 1, the unconnected parts allowing a slight lateral or longitudinal spring or play to the strips, which facilitates the removal of dirt, &c., from the feet when scraped thereon.

If desired, the upper edges of the strips 1) may rise a little higher than the upper edges of the frame A and the strips a, as shown in Fig. 2, or vice versa.

tion is to provide ahard comparatively sharp scraping-edge for relieving the soles of boots and shoes of mud, snow, ice, &c. When such material is removed, it drops through the mat to the floor. By raising the matthis refuse can be easily removed.

The principal feature of my invention is its ability to cut through the mud, snow, and ice, and the strength which is imparted to the mat by reason of the longitudinal strips a, in combination with the intermediate strips, 1), and the suitable connections between them.

What I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a metallic door-mat comprising the parallel strips a, standing on edge, zigzag intermediate strips, 1), arranged between the strips a, and suitable connections uniting the said strips or, and b, the Whole being combined to form spaces through which dirt may pass, substantially as set forth.

2. A metal door-mat consisting of the outer frame, A, and longitudinal strips a, connected to the ends of the frame, and intermediate strips, 1), extending transversely between the adjacent strips a, to which they are secured at different points, substantially as described.

3. A metal door-mat consisting of the outer frame having longitudinal strips a and the intermediate transverse strips, 1), lying between the adjacent strips a, the strips 1) bein g connected to the strips to at alternate contacting points, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A metal door-mat consisting of the outer frame, A, having longitudinal strips a and the intermediate'strips, b, extending transversely between the strips 01., to which they are secured, the upper edges of the strips a and b lying in diiferent planes, substantially as described.
