PAPER-HANGING MACHINE.
, SZQECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,612, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed July 9, 1888- Serial No. 279,426- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LIBERTY B. POLK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hanging Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in paper-hanging machines; and it consists in certain novelty in the construction, arrangement,vand combination of the various parts of the same, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my said invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section taken on the line an ac of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail illustrating the cut-off or valve of the paste-box; Fig. 5, a detail illustrating a modification of the device used for discharging the paste from the paste-box.
Referring to said drawings, A is the frame of the machine, which consists of the side plates, A A ,formed of anysuitable material and united at their lower ends by a cross-bar,- B. Said side plates may be braced by suitable rods or angle-irons.
C is a handle secured to the cross-bar B. D is a paper-carrying roller mounted between the plates A A, said roller being at right angles to the plates and having its journals mounted in suitable bearings in said dis a crank-handle secured to one end of the roller, by means of which the paper may be wound upon the same. E and F are two rollers mounted between the plates A, in close proximity to each other, and on the opposite side of the frame from the roller D, and below said roller. G H are two rollers mounted between the plates at the top of the frame, the applying roller H projecting slightly beyond said frame. All of the rollers referred to are parallel with each other and at right angles to the side plates.
I is a paste cup or box held between angleirons or other suitable supports secured to the inner sides of the plates A, above the paper carrying roller.
Said cup or box is preferably made V-shaped in vertical cross section, and may be of any other desired form. The lower portion of its side approximate to the paper-carrying roller is provided with a discharge-aperture, I, which is covered by a perforated material, 6, or a wire screen,through which the paste or gum escapes onto the paper when unrolled, as hereinafter described.
Instead of covering the discharge-aperture with perforated material, it may be left open and providedwith a brush, 1*, secured in the bottom of the paste-box and extendingthrough said aperture, so as to engage with the paper and distribute the paste upon the same. This modified construction is illustrated in Fig. 5. On the inside of this cup is a flat cut-off or valve, K, which partially covers the perforations. Said cut-off or valve is normally held against the perforated side of the cup or box by springs K.
7c are arms mounted on a cross-rod, 10 which engage with said springs. On the end of said cross-rod is a crank-arm, connected by a rope, chain, or rod, M, with a bell-crank lever, m, on the handle. By pulling this crank down the cut-off or valve is moved away from the perforation and a greater amount of paste is permitted to flow. If desired, the cutoff may be made to entirely cover the perforations. It will thus be seen. that the operator has perfect control over the flow of the paste. Said paste box may be provided with a lid, if desired.
N is a knife cut-off having journals at either end, which are mounted in bearings at the top of the frame, so that the knife will be in close proximity to the roller H, and will normally rest flat against the same. The cuttingedge may be formed with saw-teeth, as shown, or be a smooth knife-edge. One of the journals of said knife is provided with a crankarm, n, which is connected by a rope, chain, or rod with a bell-crank lever, 12 on the handle. By pulling this crank down the knife is raised. The object of this device is to sever the paper from the roll when a sufficient length has been applied to the wall, as hereinafter described.
0 is an adjustable guide secured to the edge of the paste cup or box. by arms 0, which engage with the upper edge of said box. This guide projects at right angles to the rollers,
and is adapted to be moved laterally, soas to engage with the edge of aroll of paper of less width than the rollers, so as to hold the same at one side of the machine and keep it running perfectly true on said rollers.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The paper P is first wound on the paper-earrying roller with its figured face against the roller. It is then drawn down around the roller E and up between the rollers E and F, then up between rollers G and H, over the knife cut-elf and roller 1-1. As it passes the discharge-aperture of the paste cup or box, it receives the paste, and when it passes over the roller II it is applied to the wall and pressed firmly against the wall by said roller the paste-supply being regulated as heretofore described. \Vhen it is desired to sever the paper on the wall from the roll, operate the crank '22, raise the knife cut-off, and it will sever the paper in a straight line at the exact point desired. The rolls F and H, I connect by a band-carrier, 72, which assists in carrying the paper and prevents it from sagging. This may or may not be used, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1; In a paper-hanging machine, the combination, with a frame, a paper-carrying roller, and an applying-roller mounted in the frame, and intermediate guide-rollers mounted in the lower part of said frame, of a pastebox secured to said frame between the paper-can rying roller and applying-roller and above the guide-rollers and having a discharge-aperture in its lower portion, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described.

I11 a paper-hanging machine, the combination, with a frame, a paper-carrying roller, D, and applying-roller II, mounted in the frame, and intermediate lower guide-rollers, E and F, and upper guide-roller, G, mounted in said frame, of a paste-box, I, secured to the frame between the roller D and rollers G and H and above the lower rollers, E and F, and having a discharge-aperture in its lower portion, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described.
3. In a paper-hanging machine, the combination, with a frame, a paper-carrying roller, D, and applying-roller H, mounted in the frame, and intermediate guide-rollers, E and F, mounted in the lower part of said frame, of a paste-box, I, secured to the frame between the rollers D and H and above the guide-rollers E and F, and having a discharge-aperture covered by a perforated material, t', a springactuated valve, K, a rod, k having arms 70, engaging with said Valve, and a crank, 70 and means for operating said crank, whereby the valve may be moved to regulate the discharge of paste, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described.
4. In a paper-hanging machine, the combination, with a frame, a paper-carrying roller mounted in the frame, and an applying-roller mounted in said frame, over which the paper passes, of a knife hinged to the frame parallel with and in close proximity to the applyin g-roller and having its edge normally resting against said applying-roller, between the same and paper, and means for raising said knife to sever the paper, all constructed, ar-
ranged, and operating substantially as shown and described.
5. In a paper-hanging machine, the combination, with a frame, a paper-carrying roller, D, and an applying-roller, H, mounted in the frame, and intermediate lower guide-rollers, E and F, and upper guide-roller, G, mounted in said frame, of a laterally-adjustable guide, 0, secured to the frame between the lower guide-rollers, E and F, and upper guide-roller, G, and adapted to engage the edge of the paper and hold it to one side of the machine, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described.
