To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMEs P. H. HOOK, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of R.onie,.in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Rods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates toan improvement in fishing-rods, and more especially to the manner of securing the reel to the pole.

In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, Figure 1 shows the butt-piece of a pole or rod involving my invention and having a reel mounted thereon. Fig. 2 shows a transverse section on either line A B or O D. Fig. 3 shows a transverse section of a ferrule on line E F. Fig. l shows a longitudinal section of a section-ferrule.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the fishing-rod butt-piece.

2 is the reel.

3 is the plate on which the reel is mounted and by which it is secured to the butt-piece.

4 4: are sleeves or thimbles, having preferably a roughened external surface and a screw-threaded, tapering, or conical internal surface. I

5 5 are split ferrules having a tapering external surface and a screw-thread thereon corresponding with the thread on the internal surface of the thimbles. The ferrules 5 and 5 are so constructed and slit that the elasticity of the ferrule will open the slit in the same and hold the edges 5 5 alittle apart, and in such a manner that the ferrule maybe compressed into one of less diameter. An inwardly-extending projection, 5 is provided on ferrules 5 and 5, which is intended to work easily along recess 6 or 6, formed on the butt of the rod or pole, and prevent ferrule 5 or 5 from rotating or being rotated upon the butt-piece. The projection 5 also'answers the purpose of holding the two thimbles, ferrules 4 4C, and

ferrules 5 5, when engaging each other upon the butt-piece, by coming in contact with either end of recess 6 0r 6.

The make-up and in anner of using are as follows: The thimble 4 is slipped over the end of the buttpiece and up the rod or pole, the larger open end being down. The ferrule 5 is then slightly sprung open and placed upon the butt-piece, the proj eotion 5 being entered in slot or recess 6, the taper of ferrule, the smaller end up the rod. The thimble 4 is then entered upon ferrule 5, and it will be readily observed that as thimble 4c is screwed onto ferrule 5, both being on a taper, the internal diameter of ferrule 5 is reduced and brought nearer to the diameter of the butt piece, so that the end of a reel-plate, 3, in-

serted between the ferrule 5 and butt-piece,

ferrules are then slipped apart until the reelplate will enter between them. They are then brought together until the ferrules will engage the ends of the reel-plate, when by screwing up the thimbles 4; and et the reel will be secured firmly to the pole or rod.

By the use of the mechanism described reels having long or short, thick or thin, reeLplates may be readily secured firmly to or removed from the pole, and this without reference to whether the reel-plate has the same curve as the butt-piece or not.

Various alterations and changes may be made from the construction described without departing from the spirit of my invention.

WVha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a fishing-rod, of a split ferrule directly embracing the rod and tapered upon its outer surface, and a thimble embracing the ferrule and oppositely tapered 10c upon its, inner surface, substantially as and for the purpose described.
