Be it known that I, GEORGE C. DAY, a citizen of the United States ot America, residing atY Nineveh, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,

D and D 'refer to bifurcated bolts, the bifurcated ends of which are provided with hooks d d, with which the arms e e of' Ithe hub, through which the knob-spindle passes, will 6o engage, in order to draw the bolts toward each other, thereby retracting the latch and actuating the bell. These bolts D and D are held normally apart by a spring, F, which bears upon shoulders formed on the bolts. The bolt D is held in position, so as to move in line to and from the knob by lugs f f, which overlap the straight portion thereof.

which engages with the latch, the portion with'which it engages being curved, as shown. The bolt D is provided with a pin, G, the upper portion of which is tlat and passes through a slot in the lock-casing. The stem g of the pin is encircled by a spiral spring which bears upon washers moving upon the stem g', and the lower end of the stem of this pin 8o is secured within a tapered recess, h, formed in the bolt D, and is held'within said tapered recess by a pin which engages with the notched end, so as to permit the rotation of the pin G. Vhen it is desired to throw the bolt D out of engagement with the latch, the pin G is drawn upwardly and turned so that the head thereof will lie across the slot in the casing, thns holding the bolt up out of en- V gagement with the latch, as shown in dotted 9o lines, Fig. 1. When the bolt D is out of engagement with the latch B, said latch can only beoperated by the use of a key.

The bolt D at its end is provided with an inclined notch or ratchet, i, and adjacent to this ratchet the lower end lof the bolt is cut away at an incline, as shown at i. vThe-upper end of thebolt has an inclined notch, lc, This dog K is pivoted to the lock-casing and provided with roo a catch or hook, k', which engages with the inclined notch 7s to hold the bolt D out ot' engagement with the bell-hammer.

Immediately beneath the end of the bolt D is an inclined bar or plate, Z, upon which the arm m of the bell-hammer M rides. The bell-hammer M is drawn downwardly by a spring to strike the bell N when released. Then the bolt D is thrown out of engagement with the latch B and the knob oi the spindle turned, an alarm will be sounded without actuating the latch, and when it is desired to adjust the lock so that the spindle can be turned without soundingr the alarm the dog K is turned to engage the inclined notch 7c., which will prevent the bell-hannner being actuated. IVhen the parts are in the position shown in full lilies in the accompanying drawings and the spindle turned,` the latch will bc retracted and an alarm sounded.

It' desirable, the casing may be extended to cover the bell.

Iain aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide an alarm-lock with a bell and hammer, so that an alarm will be sounded when the knob is turned, and I do not claim such construction broadly as my invention but That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is

l. The combination, in an alarm-lock, of the bifurcated bolts l) and D', having hooks which engage with the arms of the knob-spindle, a spring for holding said bolts apart and in contact with the arms of the knob-spindle, a pivoted latch, D, operated by one of the bolts, and a bell-hammer actuated by the other bolt, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, in a lock having bolts D and D,and a bell-hannner actuated by one of said bolts, of a pivoted latch having an arm, c, stud c', through which said arm passes, and a spiral spring for throwing said latch outwardly, the upper portion of said latch being biturcated to engage with a pin, g, carried by the bolt D, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

The combination, in a lock, of the bifurcated bolt D, having hooks (Zd, which engage with arms on the knob-spindle, and a pin, G, extending through-thc lock-casing and engaging with the bolt for elevating the end thereof to throw the same out of engagement with the latch, substantially as shown, and

-for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, in an alarm-lock, of the bolt D', adapted to be actuated by the knobspindle, said bolt being provided with an inclined notch, 7c, and a pivoted dog, K, provided with a hook to engage the notch k, to hold said boltI out of engagement with the arms of the knob-spindle, so that the alarm will not be actuated, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination, in an alarm-lock, ol the bell, spring-actuated bell-hammer, and arm m, the bolt D', having inclined portions 1I and i and an inclined plate, over which the arm mr rides to release the .same from. the notches formed on the end of the bolt D', substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

6. The combination, in an alarm-lock, of the bolts D and D', constructed substantially as shown, and adapted to be operated bya sin glc knob-spindle having arms e c, said bolts being provided with a common spring, F, guidelugs ff, notches t', t', and k, formed in the bolt D', a dog, K, for engaging with one of said notches, and a spring-actuated bell-hammer with which the bolt D engages, a pin, G, extending through the lock-casing and engaging with the bolt I) to hold the same out of engagement with the latch, and a latch, B, carryinga pivotcd arm encircled by a spring, with which a key can engage for operating said latch independent of the knob-spindle, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth. y
