TYPE-WRITER CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,106, dated April 23, 1889.

. Writer Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its objects to provide a novel dust-tight case for a type-writer, and to provide novel means for adjusting the type-writer to difierent heights and for supi porting the same when inclosed within the case. These objects I accomplish by the features of construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a case, showing the type-writer platform depressed and the movable lid slightly elevated; Fig. 2, a Vertical sectional view showing the typ e-writer platform inclosed within the case and the lid closed, and Fig. 3 a similar view showing the type-writer platform in one adjusted position for use;

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, whereit will be seen that the numerals 1 and 2 indicate opposite side walls of the case; 3, the rear wall; 4, the lid, and 5 the platform on which the type-writer is mounted.

6 represents the case of drawers, the side wall, 2, of which forms a part of the inclosing-case.

7 represents adjustable cleats, which are preferably provided with slots 8, through which pass setscrews 9 and j ournaling-rivets 10. These cleats 7 form two offices, to wit: They serve as ways on which the type-writer platform 5 rests when it is in the folded position. The ends also serve as a support for the platform when it is adjusted in a working position, as shown in Fig. 3.

The platform 5 is held in working position by rear supports composed, as here shown, of cleats (1, arranged to be engaged by the rear edge of the platform, and the adjustable cleats 7 are elevated or depressed, so as to be opposite the desired opening between these cleats a. 12 represents a ledge at thebottom,beveled to receive the end of the platform 5 at the proper angle, so as to form a close-fitting joint, as shown in Fig. 2. The platform is provided at its outer edge with a flange, 13, which is located'at an obtuse or similar angle to the plane of the platform in such manner that when the latter is depressed in the case and rests at its inner edge upon the ledge 12 the said flange 13 will stand substantially vertical, and the lid 4 can rest or bear dusttight thereupon, as well as upon the upper edges of the walls of the case.

By the means here shown the typewriter can be closed against dust, the lid 4: can be turned back to rest upon the table entirely out of the Way, and the type-writer platform can be adjusted to any desired height or inclination for use.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl. A type-writer case comprising the opposite side walls, the rear wall, an opening and closing lid, the lengthwise-adjustable inclined cleats at the sides below the lid, the typewriter platform adapted to slide up and down on the cleats and to rest upon the upper ends of the latter and be adjusted to different heights thereby, and rear supports for the platform, substantially as described.

2. A typewriter case having at its opposite sides the lengthwise-adjustable inclined cleats, a type-writer platform adapted to slide up and down on the cleats and to be adjusted to different heights by the latter, rear supports for the platform, and a curved guide fixed in the rear of the case, and against which A the inner edge of the platform bears to direct the latter in its descending movement, substantially as described.

3. A type-writer case comprising the side and rear walls, the lengthwise-adjustable in= clined cleats on the side walls, the series of stationary cleats at the rear of the case, the rear supporting-ledge below the stationary cleats, and the type-Writer plat-form adapted to slide up and down upon the inclined cleats and be adjustably supported in a horizontal position by the stationary cleats and the upper ends of the adjustable cleats, substantially as described.

4. A type-writer case having an opening and closing lid, 4, the lengthwise-adjustable inclined cleats 7 at the opposite sides, the typewriter platform 5, adapted to slide up and down on the cleats, adjustable thereby to different heights and provided at its outer edge with the flange 13, to form a dust-tight bearing for the lid, rear supports for the platform, and the rear ledge, 12, for supporting the inner edge of the platform when depressed Within the case, substantially as described.

5. A type-writer case having an opening and closing lid, 4, the lel'igthwise-adjustable inclined cleats 7 atthe opposite sides, the stationary cleats a in the rear top portion, the type-Writer platform 5, adapted to slide up and down on the inclined cleats and having the flange 13 at its outer edge to form a (lusttight bearing for the lid, the rear guide, 11, against which the inner edge of the platform b ars in its descent, and the rear ledge, 12, below the guide, for supporting the inner edge of the platform, substantially as described.
