SWAGING DEVICE.
ASPECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,045, dated April 23, 1889.
Application tiled August 30, 1888.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shingle Springs, in the county lof El Dorado and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swaging-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others. skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in swaging-blocks,which are adapted to be applied to anvils, the object of the same being to provide a means whereby pieces of metal maybe rounded, my improved swaging-block providing a device whereby one person can operate the same.
Heretofore in ordinary practice a bed-piece has been provided having a groove or semicircular recess, which is placed upon the anvil, and to swage or round a piece of metal a hammer having acorresponding semicircular recess is held above the bed-piece by an assistant whilesaid grooved hammer is struck by the principal workman.
The object of my invention is to provide a means whereby the services of an' assistant can be dispensed with; and it consists in combining with the bed-piece an upper block with corresponding grooves, which is pivoted thereto.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 isl a side view of my improvement, partiallyin section, showing the same applied to an anvil. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view.
A refers to an anvil of ordinary construction, upon which the bed-piece B is adapted to be placed, the downward projection b thereofV entering a suitable recess in the anvil. This bed-piece B of the swaging-block is provided on its upper surface with transverse semicircular recesses c of diiferent sizes, and at one end of the same'is secured a link, C, which projects upwardly from the bed-piece. To this link C is secured the upper portion, D, of the swaging-block, which is provided with corresponding semicircular grooves, the outer end of the same being bifurcated and provided with a transverse pin, d, for secur- ,the opposite side Serial No. 284,138. The upper portion of the swaging-blockL D is preferably of less width than the bed-piece B, and its end opposite the pivot is inclined upwardly and outwardly, so that the operator can readily raise the same with his hammer. It will also be observed that the portion D is pivoted to one side of the center of the base-block B, which provides at 'one side straight edges, while on is a step or portion in which the metal will lie without being swaged, this being desirable in forming bolts having square shoulders and similar classes of work.
The link C, which secures the upper portion of the swage-block D to the bed-piece B, is slotted, as shown, so as to allow a vertical movement of the parts upon each other.
In swaging bars of metal with my improved device they are heated and placed between the swage-blocks, and held in proper position while the artisan strikes the upper surface of the pivoted portion D with a hammer.
I claim- I. In combination with an anvil, a bedpiece, B, having a downward projection, b, on its under side, the upper face of said bedpiece being provided with transverse grooves, the portion D, of less width than the bedpiece, said portion being pivoted to the bedpiece, the end opposite the pivot being inclined outwardly and upwardly, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The attachments for anvils herein described, consisting of a bed-piece, B, having transverse semicircular grooves, and portion D, pivoted thereto and provided with corresponding grooves, for the purpose set forth.
3. The improved swaging-block herein described, consisting of a bed-piece, B, having downward projection b, for securing the same to an anvil, link C, having slotted portions, through which t-he pivot-pins pass, and portion D, pivotally secured to the bed-piece, so as to be capable of a vertical movement therein when in a horizontal position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i
