Description
p UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETE-R SOHILDECKER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED EGG-BEATER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,11 dated October (i, 1863.
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that l, PETER SCHILDECKER, of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and Sta-te ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Egg- Beaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved egg-beater, the cap which forms the front end being removed. Fig. 2 is rear end view ot' my improved egg-beater. Fig. 3 is a vertical section ot' myegg-beater through the axis of the cylinder. Fig. 4 is a perspective representation of the cap or movable end piece.
In the several figures like letters refer to similar parts.
My improved egg-beater is designed to beat up the white of eggs or eggs mixed with sugar, and by the use of it I am enabled to accomplish the result more etfectually and in a much shorter space of time than by hand or by the use of any contrivances for a similar purpose with which I am acquainted.
My apparatus consists of a horizontal cylin der, a, which may be made of tin or other suitable material, which is supported 011 a light frame-work, b. It is closed at the rear end, o, but the front end is furnished with a movable cap or cover, d, the rim e of which laps over the end of the cylinder a, as seen in Fig. 3.
ln the rim e of the cap are two shaped slots, j', which are diametrically opposite to each other, and which pass over two pins, g g, on opposite sides of the cylinder a, close to its frontend, so that by placing the cap on the end of the cylinder, with the pins g g entering the slots j' in the cap, and then turning the cap a short distance round, the cap is se curely fastened on the end ofthe cylinder, thus closing it up so as to prevent the escape of any of the contents of the cylinder.
At the forward end and lower part of the cylinder a is al spout, h, sloping downward, through which the contents of the cylinder pass when the cover is removed.
In the center of the cylinder a is a horizontal shaft, i, which is supported at the rear end by entering the round hole bored in the shaft k, and at the front end by entering a hollow projection, l, in the center of the movable cap d. This shaft t' is prevented from turning on its axis, when the machine is in use, by a pin, m, attached to the outside of the cap d, which may be pressed down so that its lower extremity enters a hole, 0, in the projection l on the cap, and passes through a corresponding hole in that part ofthe shaftt which is seated in the projection l, as seen in Fig. 3.
To the horizontal shafti are rigidly attached a number of arms, n n', which are set in pairs at uniform distances along the shaft, two arms, n fn, at each point being set at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. l.
The beater consists of aframe composed of a number of parallel bars, p, placed at uniform distances apart, so that each bar p will come between a pair of arms, n af, when in place in the cylinder a. These bars p are connected together by two horizontal slats, q q', one of which, q, connects one extremity of all the bars p, and the other, q', connects the other extremity of all the bars p.
In the center of each bar r is a ring, through which the horizontal shaft t' passes, the bars turning on the shaft t' as their center. The bar lo', at the rear end of the beater-frame, has a square box-flange around the ring at its center, in which box flange the square end of the shaft lo enters, as seen in Fig. 3, at the rear end of the machine, so that by the revolution of the shaft la the beater-frame is caused to revolve around the stationary arm-shaft t'.
The rapid revolution of the crank-shaft k is effected by means of a pinion, s, fastened on the outer extremity of the shaft k, and which gears into a larger cog-wheel, t, which revolves with its shaft u in bearings in the framework b of the machine by means of the crank c.
On top of the cylinder a is a funnel, w, the V aperture at the bottom of which corresponds with a circular opening, w, in the cylinder. The funnel w is fastened to a slide, y, which slides back and forth on top of the cylinder, so that when the funnel is pushed in one direction its aperture corresponds with the opening in the cylinder, and when pushed back again the opening in the cylinder is closed.
Vhen it is designed to use my machine, the funnel is slid so as to open the cylinder at the top, the cap or cover d being iirst fastened over its front end. The eggs or eggs and sugar, or whatever is intended to be beaten, are inserted through thefunnel w, which is then closed, and the rapid-revolution of the beaterframe is commenced and kept up until the eggs are beaten up into a lrm froth, which will measure twice as much as the eggs or eggs and sugar did when placed in the beater. This process takes only a small portion ofthe time which would be required to produce the same result were the operation performed by hand With an ordinary beater, and much more eft'ectually. The operation, when performed by hand, is extremely tiring, and requires to be kept up without intermission, because if suspended for even a very brief space ottime the eggs begin to sink back into their fluid state more rapidly than they can be beaten up into froth. Then the eggs 'are completely beaten, the cap d is taken oit',
when the froth will run out through the trough, or may readily be removed.
It is an important feature of my machine `that the axis of the cylinder is horizontal with a beater revolving round the axis ot` the cylinder7 because thereby a larger proportion of the contents ot' the cylinder is brought by the beaters into contact with the air than if any of the beaters revolved in the luid Without passing in and out of it at each revolution. Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ,is-
1. An egg-beater consisting-of the combination of a horizontal closed cylinder, having stationary arms u a', around and between' PETER 'SGHILDECKER.
