SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,844, dated April 23, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ONSLOW G. MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delhi, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has for its object to provide a novel and simplified construction in clasps for harness, valises, and the like, where the ends of straps are to be connected; and it consists of a plate provided with a halfrounded projection having a hook and recess formed thereon, and which fits in a corresponding recess in the socket, the two parts being held together by means of a fiat spring rigidly secured to the plate having the socket and certain details in the construction, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure is a rear elevation of my invention with the spring detached. Fig. 2 is aview of the same character with spring attached, but the parts of the fastener detached. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of my invention detached.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a plate having formed therewith a half-rounded projection, a, which may be made pointed, as in Fig. 6, with a hook, at. Upon the projection a is formed a notch, a for securely holding the parts together. A second plate, B, is provided having a socket, b, corresponding to the projection a upon the plate A. This socket is composed of a hook-shaped recess, 1), for receiving the hook at, and also a projection, 17 which lies in the notch a when the parts are brought together and locked. To the plate B of the socket is provided a stud, b provided with a square seat, which receives a flat spring, 0, being securely held in position by means of a nut; but it is evident that other means may be employed for holding the spring in position. Upon the plate A is provided a half-rounded channel, a which receives the upper end, I), of the socket when the parts are brought together in looking.

To look the parts, the plates are brought together at right angles, allowing the projection a to first pass into the socket and the hook at to press against the spring 0. When the parts are brought entirely together, the upper edge receiving the channel a, of the plate A, turn the plates until they are in a corresponding position, and when they are brought together the hook to of the projection a will enter the hook-shaped recess in the socket, and the notch a in a like manner to the projection 6 and securely lock the parts together, being held by means of the spring 0. If now the parts are to be released or unlocked, the plates are turned to the angle to which they were at the beginning of the operation and pulled apart.

In this construction it will be seen that the plates can only be turned in one direction when it is desired to unlock them and the same in releasing them.

The plates A and B are designed to be provided with the usual attachments for harnessasbuckles,throat-latches,andthelikefor holding and connecting the straps; but as any desirable means can be applied, I will not describe any specific construction.

The chief object of my invention consists in rapidity of manipulation both in attaching and detaching, its great strength, and its ornamental appearance in various designs, and which can be used in many places on harness, valises, and the like, where the ends of straps are to be fastened.

Having described the nature of my invention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a clasp, the plate A, provided with a half-rounded projection, a, having a hook, at, and recess a formed thereon, the plate B, having a socket, 1), corresponding to the said projection a, for receiving the same, and the spring 0, secured to the plate B, for locking the parts together, as shown and described.
