To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUs KUNZE, a citi' zen of the United States, and a resident of Yonkers, 'Westchester county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand printingpresses, and has for its objects to adapt such. presses to be used in a cold or heated condition, to provide ready means whereby the heated parts may be quickly cooled off, and by improvements generally in the construction to facilitate the operation thereof.
My improved press comprises a suitablyformed frame, a plunger fitted in guides and moving vertically therein, a hand-lever for actuating the plunger, a pivoted bifurcated lever controlled by a spring at one end and connected at its other ends to the plunger for raising the same, an impression bed or table fitted in ways on the frame so as to slide under the plunger at right angles thereto, a gas burn er head secured to the head of the plunger, a die-holder secured to the gas-burner head, and an inleroller carried by the sliding impression bed or table.
To more fully describe the construction and operation of the press, I will now refer to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective iew of a press embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the gas-burner head and die-holding head detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the die-holding head detached. Fi at is a transverse vertical. section of the upper part of the press. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same; and Fig. 6 is a section of the head on the line 00 a, Figs. 4 and 5.
The main frame ais provided with the vertical guides 19 I), adjusted by the screws 12 b, and the horizontal guides or ways 0. In the guides 17 b is fitted to slide the plunger d, having on its lower end the circular head d, and provided with the adjustable screw-seat e, between which and the notch f of the hand lever f is held the thrust-rod c. This handlever f is pivoted at gin the upper part of the frame a, and is provided with an adjustable stop, g, which determines the limit of its downward movement by coming in contact with the elastic seat 9 set in the side of the frame CL.
The device for raising the plunger cl consists of the bifurcated lever 71, resting on the arm a, projecting from the frame as a fulcrum-bearing, the spring 7t, connected by an eye to the side of the side frame and by means of a nut on its upper end to the outer end of the lever h, and the rods 71, 71 which are screwed in the heads of the plunger d and set on the inner ends of the lever h by means of eyes formed in their upper ends. These rods are set at an angle to facilitate the manipulation of the screw-s eat e in adjusting the impression.
The gas-burner head 2', circular in form, is hollow, and is provided with the dovetail rib t, projecting above the edge of its wall, in which wall are the orifices t t and dividing the inside of the head into two chambers. This dovetail rib fits into a groove formed in the bottom of the head cl of the plunger, extending only partly through the same. To the plunger (1 at the rear end of the dovetail groove is connected the gas-pipe j, as clearly shown at Fig. 4. From the hole (P, in which the gas-pipe is connected to the plunger, two angular passages extend to the bottom of the head of the plunger, the outlets of said passages being over the chambers in the gasburner head t', as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
The bottom of the gas-burner head L,vvhich is fiat and projects beyond the wall provided with the orifices i 71 has formed in it a clove tail groove, into which fits the dovetail rib is on the die-head 7a. This die-head carries the die Z, secured thereto by means of the screw Z, thereby providing for the ready removal and replacement of the die I from and on the head 70.
To securely fasten the gas-burner head and die-head in place, a screw, m, is fitted to pass through the head d of the plunger (1, through the gas-burnerhead t', and into the die-head 7c, as shown at Fig. 4. l
The impression bed or table a, fitted to slide on the ways 0, is of the ordinaryconstruction. It is provided at its rear end with bearings o, in. which rests the inlcroller 0, so arranged as to roll in contact with the die Z when the bed at is pulled forward in position to receive a sheet of the material to be impressed.
The operation of this class of printing-press is generally understood, so it will only be necessary here to describe the manipulation of the movable heads and the action of the heating device. The gas entering the two chambers in the head 4; through the gas-pipe d and passages d 61 issues therefrom at the orifices t 4?, and upon being ignited heats the head (2 of the plunger and burner-head Q uniformly, and by conduction also heats the diehead 70 and die Z, attached thereto. By this arrangement the die is regularly heated and maintained at a constant temperature.
It is often advantageous to be able to do cold printing on a machine immediately after a part of the work or another job has been run off the press While in a heated condition. This I provide for by the burner and dieheads being so constructed as to be readily removed from the press, which is accomplished by backing up the screw on until it clears the burner-head, inserting the handle or bar 19 in the screw-hole at the front of the burner-head, drawing it out from the plunger-head, as shown at Fig. 2, and then cool the detached heads by spraying them with or dipping them in water, after which they maybe set backin the press with the same die or another one, as desired, secured to the die-head. If it is required to remove the die-head only to cool it, for an exchange of dies, or for an examination of the die attached thereto, then the screw 0% need only be unscrewed to clear said head, and the handle 19 inserted in the screw-hole at the front thereof, when it may be removed from the gas-burner head, as shown at Fig.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the plunger of a printing-press, of a hollow gas-burner head detachably secured thereto, said plunger having gas-passages opening into the hollow head, and said hollow head having orifices in its sides, through which the gas escapes, and when ignited impinges against the bottom of the plunger.
2. In a printing-press, in combination, a plunger having a circular head and a dovetail groove in the under side thereof, a hollow gas-burner head having orifices through its side and provided with a central dovetail rib adapted to fit in the groove of the plungerhead and a dovetail on its under side, and a die-head provided with a dovetail rib adapted to fit in the groove at the under side of the gas-bu rner head.
3. In a printing-press, in combination, a plunger having a circular head, with a dovetail groove formed partly through the under side thereof, agas-pipe secured thereto, and passages from the pipe extending through the bottom at either side of the groove, a hollow gas-burner head provided with orifices through its side and having a central rib dividing it into two chambers and projecting above it in the form of a dovetail to fit the groove in the plunger-head, a die-head provided with a dovetail rib adapted to fit in a groove in the under side of the gas-burner head, a die secured to the die-head by means of a central screw, and a locking-screw passing through the plunger-head and the gas-burner head into the die-head.
