UNTTE STATES LATENT OFFICE.
HORATIO FLETCHER, OF. NElVCASTLE-UPON-TYN E, COUNTY OF NORTl-IUM- BERLAND, ENGLAND.
COMBINED DRUM AND GRIPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,727, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed April 30, 1888. Serial No. 272,362. (No model.) Patented in England June 23, 1887, No. 8,946, and November 18,1887,N0.15,8'70; in France March 27,1888,No. 189,621; in Belgium March 27, 1888, No. 81,196; in Italy March 31, 1888, XLVI, 47, and in Austria-Hungary July 5, 1888, No. 13,185. v
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO FLETCHER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Sydenh am Terrace, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the county of Northumberland,England, haveinventedanewanduse= ful Combined Drum and Gripper for WVinding and Hauling or Hoisting Machines, (for which I have obtained foreign patents, as follows: British, 23d June, 1887, No. 8,946, and 18th November, 1887, No. 15,870; French, 27th March, 1888, No. 189,621; Belgian 27th March, 1888, No. 81,196; Austrian, 5th, July 1888, Ad. No. 13,185, and Italian, Reg. Att. Vol. XLVI, No. 47, dated 31st March, 1888,) of which the following is a specification. u
According to this invention, for the p urpose of retaining ropes or cables and of preventing their slipping on barrels or drums of winding and hauling machines such, for instance, as warping capstans-whether such barrels or drums or equivalent be vertical, as in an ordinary capstan, orhorizontal, as in a Windlass, winch, crane, or hoist, I combine therewith a gripping device comprising fixed and movable jaws adapted to grip and release (as required) the rope or cable and furnished with a screw or other suitable mechanical device, whereby the jaws may be moved together or farther apart. Such a combination with a capstan-barrel is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a partial vertical section, and Fig. 2 an elevation at right angles thereto.
1 is the barrel, which is in this example ver tical, being part of a capstan, although obviously it might be horizontal, as in a Windlass, winch, crane, or hoist. With the said barrel or equivalent 1 the following parts are combined.
2 and 3 are the two jaws of a gripping device carried by the barrel and adapted to hold or release a rope or cable, A, as desired. The gripper is shown applied to the top portion of the barrel; but it may obviously be applied to the lower part thereof where desirable. The jaw 2 is fixed to the barrel, while the jaw 3 is adapted to be moved nearer to or farther from the jaw 2 by means of a screw-threaded bolt, 45, that works within a hole formed in thebarrel and is carried bya bearing at the upper end thereof, as shown. The jaw 3 moves within a slot or guide in the cylindrical port-ion of the barrel, and is thereby prevented from moving except in a direction to and from the fixed jaw.
5 is a tube or sleeve encircling the upper part of the screw-threaded bolt 4 and provided with a pin or projection, 6, arranged to slide in an inclined slot or cam-groove, '7, formed in a tubular extension, 8, on the top of the barrel. By raising or lowering the tube or sleeve 5, by means of the pin or projection 6, the jaw 3 may be rapidly moved toward or from the fixed jaw 2, the final closing movement to grip a rope or cable being effected by turning the bolt 4. The jaw 3 may, however, be operated solely by rotating the bolt 4, if desired.
It is not necessary to illustrate a horizontal barrel or drum, the application of the gripping device to such being the same as above described.
W'hat I claim is 1. In winding machinery, the combination of a winding-barrel, a gripping device comprising a fixed and a movable jaw, both applied to and extending outwardly from the circumference of said barrel, and a rod located within and extending to one end of said barrel for actuating said movable jaw, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
2. In winding machinery, the combination of a winding-barrel having a slot or guide, a hole extending lengthwise therein, and a bearing for a rod, a gripping device comprising a jaw fixed to said barrel, and a movable jaw prising a fixed and a movable jaw applied to and extending outward from the circumference of said barrel, and a screw-threaded rod adapted to engage with and actuate said movable jaw, said rod being located within and extending outward from one end of said barrel, against which it has a bearing, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
' 4. In Winding machinery, the combination of a winding-barrel formed with a slot or guide, a gripping device comprising a jaw, 2, fixed to said barrel, a jaw, 3, movable within said slot or guide, a screwthreaded bolt, 4, arranged within and extending outward from one end of said barrel and adapted to operate said jaw 3, and a bearing at one end of said barrel and against which said rod acts, substantially as hereinbefore described, for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, with a winding-barrel, of a gripper comprising a fixed jaw, 2, amovable jaw, 3, a screw-threaded bolt, 4, adapted to move said jaw 3 nearer to or farther from the fixed jaw 2, a tubular extension, 8, with slot or cam-groove 7, a sleeve, 5, encircling said screw-threaded bolt, and a pin or proj ection, 6, secured to said sleeve and adapted to work in said slot or cam-groove 7, substantially as hereinabove described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HORATIO FLETCHER.
