Pin 29 may be adjusted by means of a screw cap 30, whereby the tension of the spring bearing against the pin may be regulated.
Associated with eye 28 of lever 27 is a pull rope 31, which, when operated, causes lever 27 to swing downwards, as shown in Fig. a, whereby the jaws of cable gripping members 25 are brought out of engagement with and into cleared position relative to the cable portions.
When pull rope 81 is released, and when the movement of the cable is reversed to that at which a load is hoisted by the device, gripping members 25 will immediately wedge the cable portions against stationary gripping or spacer members 22, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and lever 27 will swing upwards. The function of my device is automatic and prevents back-slipping of the cables during hoisting operation, or when the such operation is temporarily stopped.
Reverting again to Fig. 1, I have shown that the cable extends from thimble 11 downwards, passes over left hand sheave of the lower block, then upwards to and over the left hand sheave of the upper block, then downwards again and over the right hand sheave of the lower block, and up and over the right hand sheave of the upper block. From that sheave the cable extends outwards and forms the engaging or operating end 32.
One of the outstanding advantages of my arrangement resides in its safety. Assuming that the cable breaks at any point, the gripping members 25 will immediately function and engage the cable portions remaining in the lower block and lock them against further movement, thereby preventing the load from falling and causing damage or injury to the operator.
While I have shown a specific form of my double sheave device, triple, quadruple sheave blocks, and other changes and improvements may be readily incorporated, and I therefore reserve for myself the right to make such changes and improvement within the broad scope of my invention, as set forth in the annexed claim.
I claim:
In a multiple sheave block, a pair of cheek members, a plurality of stationary cable engaging spacers, a plurality of pivotally mounted cable gripping members operatively located between said spacers and forming one movable unit, a releasing arm extending from the unit, a spring controlled member slidable in a recess in said arm and bearing against one of said spacers and adapted to normally elevate said arm, thereby keeping said cable gripping members normally in light engage- CHARLES F.
