P. GOLLEY. ROLLS FOR ROLLING BULB WEBBED SLOT RAILS. No. 401,692. Patented Apr. 16, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK COLLEY, OF JOHNSTOIVN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE JOHNSON STEEL STREET RAIL COMPANY, OF KENTUCKY.
ROLLS FOR ROLLING BULB-WEBBED SLOT-RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,692, dated April 16, 1889.
Application filed November 16, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK COLLEY, of J ohnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolls for Rolling Bulb-WVebbed Slot-Rails, which invention is fully set forth and illustrated in the following specification and accompanying drawing.
The object of this invention is sufficiently expressed in its title.
The invention will first be described in detail in the specification, and then particularly set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, the several parts below referred to are indicated by reference numbers and letters as follows:
I11 said drawing the rolls are illustrated in front elevation, having passes numbered from 1 to 6, inclusive, the letter A indicating the top roll and athe bottom roll. The hot metal to be rolled is run through these passes consecutively and without turning. That part in each pass which shapes the head portion of the rail rolled from the hot billet or bloom is indicated in the drawing by the letter H, the web portion of such rail by the letter W, and the bulb portion of such rail by the letter B. In pass No. 1 the web portion of the metal W is rapidly reduced, the corners of the metal taken off, and the bulb portion B commenced to beformed.
In the design of these rolls the formation of the passes is such that the lower angle of the head portion of the rail (marked 72) is thrown consecutively and rapidly nearer the outer and upper edge of the head in the first three passes, and the neutral portion of the mass of metal throughout the passes from 1 to 6 is Serial No. 290,987. (No model.)
taken at the corner marked N, which forms the outer projection of the head in the fino ished section from pass No. 6. The result of this location of the angle portion h in the first three passes is to spread the Web WV of the mass, and this spread is continued in greater excess in the passes from 4 to 6, in- 5 elusive. In pass No. 1 the formation of the upper and lower side of the bulb B is started.
In pass No. 2 the draft is concentrated for the formation of the lower side of the bulb B. In passes from 3 to 6, inclusive, the draft is concentrated on the upper side of said bulb, its lower portion having been effectively formed in the first three passes.
It will be observed that the thickness of the head portion H is reduced entirely by the change of locations of the angle portion h.
I do not limit myself to the exact number or distribution of passes shown, as the number of passes is to a certain extent arbitrary, being influenced by the length and diameter 6: of the rolls, a light train of rolls calling for more passes with lighter draft than a heavy roll-train. It is also evident that the rolls can, if desired, be made three-high instead of two-high, as shown.
Having thus fully described my said improvement in rolls, as of my invention I claim Rolls for rollingbulb-webbed slot-rails, provided with passes having conformations substantially of the forms described, for thepurposes set forth.
FRED. COLLEY. W'itn esses A. MONTGOMERY, W. MoLAIN.
