GEARING FOR PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,512, dated April 16, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL HEINRICH CON- RAD OEHLMANN, of the city of Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Pumps, (for which Letters Patent heretofore were granted to me by the governments of Germany, dated December 10, 1888, No. 46,457; France, dated November 9, 1888, No. 193,179; Belgium, dated October 15, 1888, No. 83,383, and Italy, dated December 27, 1888, No. 24,230/62) of which the following is a specification.
In pumps in which the crank'shaft that is connected with the pump-rod is operated by cog-wheels the teeth wear out very rapidly and produce very unpleasant noises, for the reason that whenever the crank-shaft passes the dead-center said shaft runs faster than the driving cog-wheel, causing the teeth of the cog-wheel to strike against each other. The jars thus produced not only destroy and wear out the teeth of the cog-wheels, but also the bearings, joints, and other parts of the pump.
The invention consists in the combination, with a pump, of a crank-shaft connected with the pump mechanism, cog-wheels for driving said crankshaft, and a brake for retarding the crank-shaft.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved pump, parts be ing in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic View of some of the teeth of the'two cog-whee1s, showing them properly engaged. Fig. t is a similar view showing the teeth of the cog-wheel on the crank-shaft slightly in advance of the corresponding teeth of the driving cog-wheel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The pu mp-piston is operated from the crankshaft g by the connecting-rods shown in dotted lines. On the crank-shaft g is mounted the cog-wheel h, engaging the pinion c' on the driving-shaft m, carrying a fly-wheel and fixed and loose pulleys. The arm a is suitably fixed to the support A of the pump, and to the said arm the curved spring I) is fastened, which is provided on its under side with two lugs, c d, between which the brake-shoe e is held above the rim of the cog-wheel h, the spring I) serving to press said brake-shoe against the teeth of the cog-wheel h. The screw f serves for adjusting the brake-shoe and also the tension of the spring. If desired, the brake-shoe can be applied on a separate wheel, 0, on the crank-shaft, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) or the brake can be applied directly on the crank-shaft.
In case no brake is provided, the crankshaft g runs ahead when passing the deadcenter, as shown in Fig. 4, in which case the teeth of the pinion c' are not pressed against the teeth of the cog-wheel h, but are a short distance from the same. When the speed of the cog-wheel h diminishes, the teeth of the pinion t' strike against the teeth of the cogwheel h and produce a disagreeable noise, and also jars and shocks, causing a rapid Wearing of the teeth of the cog-wheel and of parts of the pump.
If a brake is provided and applied, it prevents the crankshaft from traveling faster while passing the dead-center, and thus the teeth of the cog-wheel and pinion are at all times normally engaged, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby all jars, &c., are avoided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a driving-shaft, of a pinion on said driving-shaft, a crank-shaft, a cog-wheel on said crankshaft meshing with said pinion, a spring-actuated brake resting on the teeth of said cog-wheel, and a connecting-rod connecting the crank-shaft with a pump-piston, substantially as set forth.
