ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,356, dated April 16, 1889. Appli ation filed September 24, 1883. Serial No. 236,162. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. LANGEBAR- TELS, a citizen of the Uni ted States of America, residing at Star, in the county'of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to facilitate the adjustment and improve the operation of a reversible scraper suspended from a carriage and to adapt it to be used for ditching as well as for scraping and grading a road.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of a scraper and a carriage, a flexible draft device, mechanism for reversmg and adjusting the scraper horizontally, and mechanism for raising and lowering the scraper, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my machine in position as required for scraping and moving ground to the right. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of parts of the draft device and adjusting mechanism. Fig. 3 is atop view of the machine.
A is the front axle, and A the rear axle, of a four-Wheeled carriage.
B are bolsters fixed on the tops of the axles. B is a bolster on the front axle, and O is a frame and reach fixed on top of the pivoted holster B at its front end and on top of the fixed bolster on the rear axle at its rear end.
C represents a bench supporting a drivers seat over the front part of the frame.
cl is a circular plate in an opening formed in the under side of the fixed bolster B on the front axle, A, and secured thereto by means of a king-bolt, d, extended down through the pivoted bolster B in such a manner that the plate (Z and bolster B can rotate horizontally and independently.
F is a pole connected to the front axle by means of hounds or braces g.v
h are fiat metal bars pivoted to the front axle by means of the king-bolt d and with the pole F by means of a bolt, k, that extends down through a slot in the pole, and also through a doubletree, h",placed between the front ends of the bars. A flexible draft device is thus provided for hitching horses to the carriage.
J is ascraper of common form suspended from the carriage-frame by means of bars J that are detachably connected with irons fixed to the scraper and adjust-ably connected with levers J pivoted to the top of the carriageframe, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The levers J 3 are connected with the ends of a crossbar, K, that is pivoted at its center to a cross-bar of the carriage-frame.

on is a lever pivoted to a fulcrum that rises from the bar h, and m" is a treadle or post attached to the lever and extended up through the carriage-frame in such a manner that the driver in the seat can lift the pin on by footpressure on the top of the post, as required, to unlock the plate (I and to change the angle of the scraper or to reverse it.
n are chains attached to the scraper and detachably connected with carriage-frame and the levers J n are chains attached to the center of the scraper and detachably connected with hooks n on the sides of the carriage-frame R is a platform on the rear end of the carriage-frame. s is a step pendent from the frame and platform to aid a person in getting on and off the platform.
To adjust or reverse the scraper, I lift the pin m and free the circular plate (1, turn the scraper into the position desired by means of the levers J and then look the plate d again and stretch and fasten the chainsn and n, as required to stay the scraper.
To adj ust the scraper as required .for making a ditch therewith, I detach one of the dragbars Z and let. the end of the scraper extend rearward, and then fasten the rear end to the frame by means of one of the chains it, while the front end is connected with the front axle and flexible draft device by means of the circular plate d. This will bring the scraper into an acute angle relative to the line of advance and to one side of the machine, so that when the machine is moved forward it will scrape a narrow area and press the dirt to one side, as required to make a ditch.
To raise and lower the scraper while at work, I move the levers J 3 from one hook to another on the posts It".
I To elevate and make the scraper inoperative,I turn it square across the line of ad- Vance and connect the levers J 3 with the hooks at the tops of the posts 70'.
I am aware that avertically-moving pin has been used to retain a scraper locked in a fixed position relative to a carriage; but my manner of constructing and combining a locking device with a carriage and an adjustable perforated circle pivoted to the carriage-axle and adj ustably connected with the scraper is novel and advantageous.
I claim as my invention 1. In a road-scraper, the combination of the bars h, pin h, doubletree h, a pole having a slot, a circular plate, (1, and a bolt, d, with the front axle and bolster of a four-wheeled carriage, for the purpose stated.
2. A road-scraper having drag-bars at its opposite ends adj ustably connected with a circular perforated plate pivoted to the center of the axle of a carriage,-to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes stated.
3. A scraper having loops Z on its back, drag-bars having rear ends adapted to enter said loops and to fit against the back of the scraper, and a circular plate pivoted to the axle of a carriage and adjustably connected with the drag-bars by means of links, to 0p erate in the manner set forth, for the purposes stated.
4. The combination of the perforated plate (1, pivoted to the carriage-axle, the perforated bars h, fixed to the same axle, and the looking device composed of the pin m, lever m, and treadle m, substantially as shown and described, for the purposes stated.
