Description

(No Model.) r
W. H. MURPHY. SASH FASTENER.
Patented Apr. 9,- 1889.
I Winarew;
UNITE STATES PATENT WILLIAM H. MURPHY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, WILLIAM KANITZER, AND MATTI-IIAS LAVEN, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,293, dated April 9,1889.
Application filed February 2, 1889. Serial No. 298,516. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient device adapted to securing either the upper or lower window-sash frame, or both of them, in any position.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the sash-locks, as de scribed herein, and shown in the accompanying drawings, and is specifically defined in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window provided with my sash-lock. Fig. 2 is a view of the mechanism of my sashlock, and Fig. 3 shows details of the same.
In the drawings, A is a bolt sliding horizontally in the guiding-bed A, placed on the top of one of the stiles A of the lower sash. Racks 13 and B are placed on the partingstrip O between the sashes and on the inner side of the stile of the upper sash, into which the two divisions a and a, of the bolt A play. The bolt is pushed in and out of the recesses b of the racks by means of a pin, a, on the bolt and slotted arm D, pivoted on a rod, D, extending down the inside of the stile of the lower sash. The rod D terminates in a projecting lever or handle, d, within easy reach of the hand, a quarter-turn of which serves to insert or withdraw the bolt A when two recesses, b, of the racks B and B are opposite one another.
In Fig. 2 the portions of the lock are seen enlarged, (1 being the slot in which the pin a works, a and a being guides on the plate A, between which works the bolt A. E is a cover placed over the works to exclude the dust.
It will be observed that either or both of the window-sashes may be secured in any position.
Slight changes in the construction of my device may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. Thus the pin a may be formed on the arm D and the slot cl in the bolt A.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for locking window-sashes, consisting of recesses in the partingstrip which separates the sashes of a window, recesses in the stile of the upper sash of the window, a guide-plate, a sliding bolt adapted to enter the recesses in the parting-sash strip and the stile of the upper window-sash, and an arm for throwing the sliding bolt, all arranged sub stantially as described.
WILLIAM II. MURPHY.
