G. FUCHS.
WITNESSES: I 5 a lA/I/E/VTOI? V J i ll! J f g m ll] ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV FUCHS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAIL-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,908, dated April 9, 1889.
Application filed January 4, 1889. Serial No. 295,395. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV FUCHS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Boxes, Pails, or Receptacles for Tobacco or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new cover for boxes, pails, or other receptacles for tobacco or the like, for keeping the contents moist and yet easily accessible.
The invention consists in the details of improvement and-the combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section on the line 0 c, Fig. 2, of a pail having my improved cover, showing the cover closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the cover partly opened, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of part of the cover and pail.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents a pail for tobacco or the like; but the pail may be replaced by any other suitable receptacle.
B is a ring of metal that has a horizontal part, E, and at the outer edge of the horizontal part E the ring B is turned up at a, then outwardly at b, and downwardly at the outer edge at (1, thereby forming an annular groove, which receives the upper edge of the pail or receptacle A, as shown. Rivets or tacks e may be passed through the outer flange, d, of the ring B into the pail A to retain the same in position.
To the inner edge of the horizontal part E of the ring B is soldered a plate, D, which is the main part of the cover. The outer edge of the plate D where it joins the ring B is bent upwardly, so as to form an annular groove, f, the plate D being thereby brought below the horizontal part E of the ring B, as shown.
The plate D has an opening, F, which is kept closed by an oscillating segment or plate, G, that is pivoted 011 the plate D, as at g. The circular outer edge of the segment or plate G enters the groove f, whereby the segment G is held in its proper position. The
oscillating segment G is provided with a knob or the like, h, whereby it may be turned or oscillated, and said segment is larger than the opening F, so as to entirely close the opening.
When it is. desired to remove any of the contents of the pail, the plate G is turned on its pivot g to uncover the opening F. The plateG is afterward turned back to retain the contents and prevent the escape of moisture from the tobacco.
By my improved cover the tobacco may be kept in a moist state for a long time, because the cover will prevent the speedy evaporation of the moisture in the tobacco. The oscillating plate G will always be ready and at hand to cover the opening F.
When the pail or receptacle A is to be transported, I place a cover, H, of suitable shape and of wood or the like, on the upper edge of the pail, above the ring B, whereby the contents of the pail are securely retained.
The cover may be held on the pail by an angle-piece, a that extends along the side of the pail and over the upper side of the cover, as in Fig. 1, or by screws or otherwise.
By making the cover depressed at D, as shown, an air space or cushion is left between the cover H and ring and plate B D, which actsto prevent the escape of moisture from the contents of the pail.
Having now described my invention, what-I claim is l 1. The combination of the ring B, having an outer annular groove to receive the upper edge of a receptacle, and a horizontal part, E, with a plate, D, secured to the inner edge of the ring B, the plate D, having an opening, F, and with the oscillatory segment or plate G, pivoted on the plate D and adapted to cover the opening F, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pail or receptacle A, having the cover H, with the ring B, having an outer annular groove to receive the upper edge of the receptacle, and a horizontal part, E, and with the plate D, secured to the inner edge of the ring B, and the oscillatory segment or plate G, pivoted on the plate D, the plate D having an opening to be covered by the segment G, substantially as described.
