v OF SAME PLACE.
SAD-IRON.
SPECIFICATION formi'ng part of Letters Patent No. 400,*796, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed February 14, 1887. Serial No. 22'7,533. (No model.)
u To call whom 't may concerns Be it known that I, ALBERT ROSA, of Mil- 'waukee, in'the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons; and I do hcreby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My inventionrelates to that class of sadirons that are made hollow and heated by 3 burning charcoal placed therein, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and conbination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequentiy a claimed.
" `.figure 1 represents a perspective View of a ad-iron constructed according to my inven- J on, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section E a portion of the iron.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the hollow shell or body-piece of ny iron, provided with a smoothing-face, B, and hinged cover O, the latter having a handle, D, and a pivoted latch-piece, E, that engages 2 5 a lug, F, projectng up from said shell. The hinged cover O, as illustrated in Fig. 1, has its edges provided with a series of depending iugs arranged at suitable intervals and designed to rest upon the adjacent edges of the shell A, whereby a draft-space is leftbetween the upper edges of said shell and the under side of the cover when the latter is in its normal position, the apertures between the lugs serving as draft-openings and the lugs 3 5 as guards to prevent the escape of sparks from burning charcoal.
-The sides of the shell A are provided with longitudinal draft-openings G and bearin gs H H' for the journals I' of plates or dampers 0 I for said openings. Each of the plates or dampers I has a handle, J, and operative in the bearings H are set-screws K, to hold said plates in any position to which they may be adjusted. The rear end of the iron is provided with a draft-opening, L, and has pivoted thereto a guide-plate, M, provided with p slots or perforations a.
Operative in the guide-plate M is a slide, N, having slots or perforations b, a'rranged to be brought in and out of register with the ones a in said guide-plate, this Construction being similar to that described in my application for patent filed February 7,1887, Serial No. %6,784. I
By means of the adjustable plates or damp- 5 5 ers I the area of the openings G in the sides of the iron may be Varied to regulate the draft for the purpose of increasing or diminishing the heat, and it will be noticed that said piates are arranged to defiect the air and 6o cause it to strike the mass oi' fuel at the lowest possible poiut. WVhen the iron is temporarily laid aside, all the' lower draft-openings may be closed in order to effect a saving in fuel.
Having thus fully described my invcntion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hoilow sad-iron having its body portion provided with a cover of such Construction that a draft-space and openings are left between said shell and cover when the latter is in its normal position, longitudinal openings in the sides of the shell near its base, platcs or dampers journaled in bearings on said consin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT ROSA. Witnesses:
I-I. Gr. UNDERWOOD, N. E. OLIPHANT.
It is hereby Certified that the name of the assignee in Letters Patent No. 400 granted April 2, 1889, upon the application of Albert Rosa, of Milwaukee, Wiseo for an improvement in Sad Irons, was erroneously written and printed J enni Zinn, whereas said' name should have been written and printed J enm'e A. Zims; that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the E may oonform to the oorreeted files and records of the ease in the Patent Office.
Signed, comtersigned and sealed this 23d day of April, A. D. 1889.
[SEAL.] GYRUS BUSSEY,
I x Assistant Secretary of the Ime Countersigned C. E. MITGHELL,
Oomm'ss'oner of Patents.
