PATENT CEEICE.
OF CLYDE, MICHIGAN.
CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,693, dated April 2, 1889.
Application tiled February 25, 1888. Serial No. 265,332. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CYEENIUs LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Clyde, county of St. Clair, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cribs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. V
My said invention relates to improvements in cribs adapted to be used in the construction of docks, breakwaters, and like purposes.
The obj ect of my invention is to construct docks, breakwaters, and similar structures in such a manner that the timbers used as the walls of the crib will be held to the bottom of the water by the entire weight of the stones or other material used in lling, and, further, to so construct the crib that the piles used ing the crib, piles, and filling an entirety, no part being movable without `the entire crib also moving.
The particular construction, arrangement,
said invention I will now proceed to point accompanying drawings,v in which Figure lis a perspective of a crib constructed in accordanceV with my invention, ready to be filled, the piles being shown in position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to said' drawings, A represents the crib, the sides and ends of which are constructed with double walls B C, having a bottom. The timbers a of the inner walls project across the space between the two walls and are interlocked with timbers of the outer wall. The entire structure is braced by cross-beams b, which are secured to the` upper tier of the timbers of both the inner and outer walls and extend across the top of the inner and outer compartments of the crib. This bracing also serves to receive the flooring or superstructure desired.
The compartment or space within the inner walls is provided with a solid bottom or flooring D, the timbers of which are of sundcient strength to bear the weight of the lling.
The crib is sunk by illing the inner compartment with stones or other suitable material, and when it is in the proper position piles vE are driven between the inner and outer walls. The piles at the corners of the inner walls are connected by chains F, which eX- tend over the top of the projecting timbers a, thus securing the crib to the piles. When the piles are driven, the space between said inner and outerwalls is* then filled with stone or other suitable material.
My invention possesses many advantages lover the old forms of single-wall cribs. It can be readily sunk at the desired point by simply lilling the inner compartment with stone. The solidity given the crib and firmness with which it is held to the ground by the weight of the iilling, which is borne by the solid bottom of the inner compartment, prevents the force of the water from raising any part of the crib without moving the entire crib. The pilesl also, being driven in the space between the inner and outer walls and being secured as described, are greatly strengthened, and their usefulness increased by the weight of the crib, which tends to hold said piles iirmly in place, thus preventing all vibration and consequent weakening.
Having thus-fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The herein-described crib, having double walls, a space between said walls open at the top and bottom, and' a compartment within the inner walls, having a solid bottom, substantially as shown and described.
2. 'A crib having outer and inner walls, B and C, secured to each other by the projecting timbers a, a space between said walls open at the top and bottom, and a compartment within the inner walls, B, having a solid bottom, D, substantially as shown and described.
3.r The combination, with the cribs having double walls, a space between said walls open at the top and bottom, and a compartment within the inner walls, having a solid bottom, of suitable piles driven between the inner and IOO outer Walls of the erib, substantially as shown l and described.
