UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D'. FILKINS AND JOHN M. FILKINS, OF JOHNSON TOWNSHIP, IND.
IMPROVED PUNCH-BLOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,030, dated September 22, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN D. FILKINs and J oHN M. FILKINs, ot the township of Johnson, in the county of La Grange and State of India-na, have invented a new and useful niaehine, named a punch-block,77 and t0 be used by blacksmiths for punching' iron; and we do hereby declare that the following,` is a full, clear, and exact description otl the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part ot this specification, in which- Lettera represents an iron block faced with steel, containing holes of various sizes; b, a thin steel plate with different-sized holes, which correspond with those in the block; c, a set-screw, which is attached to the steel plate, and which raises and lowers it Ato lit the diierent thickness of iron to be punched; d, a nut which receives the setscrew; e, a Inortise made in the steel plate to receive the guide f, which is fastened to the block, and which prevents the steel plate from moving or slipping either way; g, the handles of plate and block, and h a punch, which tapers slightly from the face end to the head.
In order to operate with themachine,mae a prick-mark on a plate of iron to be punched, and with the set-screw raise the steel plate to a sufficient height so that the iron to be punched may be placed between the plate and block with the prick-mark in the center of one of the holes; then place such a punch as hercin described with the face end on the iron plate, and of the same size of the hole in the block; then with a blow or two of the Sledge it will be driven through the iron and come through the block on the under side. In like manner holes of different sizes may be easily, speedily, and neatly punched.
