EDlVARD G. STEVENS, OF CLINTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ACCOUNT-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,014, dated March 19, 1889.
Application led October ll 1888. Serial No. 286,851. (No model.)
To all z//w'm/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. STEVENS, of Clinton, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Account-Books for Insurancelolicy Blanks, Checks, and other Uses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to an account-book for insurance-policy blanks and other uses, which has for its essential features a number of leaves or sheets, each of which comprises a printed policy in blank or other printed business form in blank, and a stub, each sheet or page having, preferably, two lines of perforations, one of which extends the full length of the leaf from top to bottom, and the other of which varies in each page or leaf as to length, and which extends, preferably, from the bottom upward, and a cross-line of perforations extending from the upper end of the latter vertical line to the former vertical line. Each page or leaf has this cross-line of perforations in. a different location or position, and preferably this is arranged in regularorder-that is, the first page or leaf is perforated to remove the largest waste-section or part of the page or leaf-and each succeeding page or leaf in order is perforated to remove a smaller waste-section of the page or leaf, so that the stubs as the blanks and waste are detached extend by eachother from the top of the page downward. This provides an account-book which is very desirable for many uses, and especially for the purposes of affording a cornplete record of all entries or transactions coucerning each and every one of the issued insurance-policies or other blanks, the principal part of which entries or information is exposed upon the turning of the cover as though upon one page or leaf,.so that the entire business or practically the entire business for which the book is used is in shape for immediate use and examination.
In the drawings I have illustrated the invention as applied to a policy blank-book for insurance companies, and Figure l is a View representing the account-book as open and partially used. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the book open andpartly used. Fig. 3 is a View in cross-section from back to front representing the account-book after all the blanks have been removed.
A represents a leaf or sheet of the book, and as many leaves or sheets maybe employed as may be desired. t
a representsthe policy-blank or printed forni. It is adapted to be detached from the remainder a of the sheet or leaf upon the vertical line a2 of perforations extending from the top to the bottom of the pageor leaf. The remaining portion or stub a comprises the section or part a3, which has suitable printed matter, such as Agency No. located at g blank for the name of the insurance company, name and residence of assured, Policy renewed term form of policy, indorsements, doc., being a section of the page upon which general information may be noted, and also the section a4, which is represented as divided into the columns a a ai as, the column a5 being headed Expiration, and being divided by ruling into three divisions for years, months, and days, the column a being headed Amount, the column a7 being headed Rate and being divided by a line into two divisions, one for old and the other new, and the column a8 being headed Premium This section c4 also bears the number of the policy. It is only necessary that the section a4 of the first page or sheet have these headings, although each page or sheet may have them, if desired. The section a of the sheet also has the part a9, which is adapted to be detached from the rest of the section a', there being a vertical line of perforations, d10, and a horizontal line of perforations, a, extending from the end of the vertical line to the line a2 of perforations. This section is practically waste. Its size in each sheet or leaf varies, and in sheet l it is the largest. It is practically one line less in length for each succeeding sheet. This adds i to each section a* another line for each leaf or sheet-that is, on policy or leaf No. l the section d4 would have one exposed line; policy or leaf No. 2 would have two lines, the second of which would be exposed; policy or leaf No. 3 would have three lines, the third IOO only of which is exposed. Only one line of section a is used for noting the information which it is desired should be readily ascertained and examinedmviz., the informa` tion under the headings Expiratitm, Amunt, Rate, Premium lVhile I have illustrated the invention as applied to a policy-blank bool; specially applicable for use in the insurance business, l would not be understood as limiting myseli', so far as the essential feature of the invention is concernethto any particular form of blank or particular use, the principal feat-ure of the invention being` the arrangement ot' theleaves and the lines oli? perforations, whereby certain sections of the leaves may be detached and certain other sections of the leaves retained, but ol different lengths extellding from the top downward, so that the record of the detached sections while written upon separate leaves or sheets arranged in vertical order and as though written upon one page or leaf, so lfar as its ready examination is concerned. (.)l course f or some uses the section a of each leal' or sheet may be dispensed with.
lt is of course obvious thatthe book maybe arrangwl so as to be removable from the last sheet iirst instead of from the first sheet, in which event the book would be used l'rom the last backward to the first sheetor leaf.
llaving thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the lUnited Statesl.. An account or check book comprising a number of sheets or leaves, each of which sheets or leaves comprises the section a', which is a blank form or blank paper, and which is detachable from the remainder ot' the sheet or leaf, and the sections a", each of which va ries in length from the top of the page downwardV and in regular order from the iirst to the last, as and for the purposes described.
2. The blank account or check book comprising a number of leaves or sheets, each oit' which has the detachable section d, and the removable section a, and the section a", each sheet of the removable section u, varying in size and regularly from the first to the last sheet or leaf, substantially as and Vfor the purposes specified.
