WASH-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,007, dated March 19, 1889.

Be it known that we, OHARLES E. POOR and GEORGE MARTIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Fairbury, in the county of Jefferson and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tashing-WIachines; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification..
rlhis invention relates to washing-machines which remove the dirt from the articles to be cleansed by the circulation of water, which is caused to rise through vertical pipes and be discharged from lateral or horizontal perforated pipes.
The improvement consists of the novel features which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical central sectional view of a washing-machine embodying our inven tion; Fig. 2, a cross-section on the line 00 a of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the false bottom.
The vessel A is provided at its upper end with the glitter a. The inner side of the gutter is fitted under the wired edge a. The cover B is arch-shaped, and its edges overlap the sides of the vessel and terminate directly over the gutter. The drippin gs from the cover fall in the gutter and pass from thence back into the vessel through the tubes b, one at each end of the vessel. These tubes communicate with the bottom of the gutter and have com munication with the interior of the vessel through openings b in its ends.
The false bottom O is provided with side walls, D, and with end walls, E. The side walls rest on the bottom of the vessel and the end walls incline and terminate a short distance from the bottom of the vessel.

Y three on each side-are connected at their upper ends with the horizontal delivery-pipes H on each side of the vessel. These pipes H are perforated on their opposin g sides, and are provided with discharge-nozzles 7L, which incline downwardly to give direction to the water. The elevating-pipes are arranged at each end of the false bottom and midway of the ends to support the horizontal pipes and supply them with water, so that a nearly equal amount of water will be discharged from each of the nozzles. The end partitions, I, arranged between the two elevating-pipes at each end of the false bottom, are perforated at their lower ends, and the upper ends of these partitions are bent outward to form the ledges t, which are perforated. The lower ends of the corner or end elevating-pipes communicate with the ducts K, which are formed by the partitions or walls 7c 7c', secured to the under side of thefalse bottom. These ducts approximately converge toward the center of the bottom. The opposing ends of the partitions k la are united by the half-round partitions k3, which fit around the lower ends of the middle elevating-pipes to form ducts K for the entrance of the water to the said middle elevating-pipes. The divider J, centrally disposed on the under side of the false bottom, is diamond-shaped, being arranged with its greatest length in thedirection of the length of the false bottom. The partitions 7c, t, and 7c3 and the divider J are as deep as the side walls, D, and are adapted to rest on the bottom of the vessel.
In practice the suds-water is poured into the vessel until it about covers the false bottom, or until it has reached a sufficient depth, and the clothes or articles to be cleansed are placed on the false bottom. The vessel is now placed on the fire, and when the water is suficiently heated it will rise in the elevatingpipes and be discharged through the nozzles h. rIhe water will escape or be drawn back in the space between the false bottom and the bottom of the vessel through the openings in the end partitions and the ledges at the top of the said end partitions.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
