SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,980, dated March 19, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY H. FISHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Paris, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ashing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in washing-machines; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The essential feature of my invention is the provision of a washingbox having cross-ribs in the bottom thereof, upon which a reciproeating rubber having like ribs is placed and moves upon longitudinal rack-strips passing through the end stays thereof.

The object of my improved machine is to facilitate the washing of clothes by means of a simple and effective construction and operation and one which is comparatively inexpensive of manufacture. I attain this object by the preferred form of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several. views, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved machine. A indicates the washing-box mounted on legs B, and having a vertical end dashguard, A, and a flat horizontally-arranged guard, A at the opposite end thereof. The bottom A of the washing'box has longitudinal and transverse strips cl and a secured therein, bearing against the sides of the said box. Inside of said strips, and extending upward on a level therewith, is a series of transversely-arranged bars, a, which do not extend entirely across the bottom of the box, in order to form a drain trough or passage, a between the ends of the same and one of the longitudinal strips a.

One end of the box A has a drain-aperture, a, in alignment with the passage or trough a by means of which the water may be drawn off. The strips a have an intersecting space between them, and the Water circulates between said strips, having unobstructed communication with said series by means of the passage or trough a Upon the strips or and side and end strips, a and a a rubber, O, is loosely mounted, and is given a longitudinal reciprocating movement. This rubber 0 consists of two end stays, a, connected by longitudinal side strips, 0 the said latter strips being angular in construction and of greater width at their central parts. To the under side of the said rubber a series of transverse strips, 0 are secured in a direction parallel with the strips (1, and are adapted to lie on the side longitudinal strips, to, a slight space being left between the same and the strips (0 in the bottom of the washing -box. The opposing edges of the strips a and c are rounded and provide a rubbin 'surface on each side of the garments or clothes washed. The rounded edges of the strips prevent tearing of the clothes, and the space between said strips also prevents clamping and tearing of the clothes while being washed. A bail, c, is movably secured at its ends in the inside faces of the side strips, 0 of the rubber, and a bent rod, 0, is centrally secured to the said bail c, and extends over the rear of the washing-box, where it is attached to an eye, 0 secured to the upper part of an operating-handle, C The lower end of the handle O is secured by a staple, 0 to a cross-piece, 13, attached to the lower part of two of the legs B. By rocking the lever 0 toward and from the adjacent end of the washing-box the rubber O is reciprooated over the strips a in the bottom of said box.

The end stays, c, of the rubber C have a series of mortises, c therein, through which a series of longitudinal rack-bars, O pass, and as the rubber is reeiprocated it-slides on said rack-bars. The rack-bars are mounted and securely tied to each other by a strip, 0 and are thereby held at equal distances apart. In connecting the rubber C and bars 0 the said bars are passed through the mortises in the end stays, c and then secured against displacement therefrom by the strip O attached thereto and lying in between the said end stays, 0 When the rubber O is reciprocated, it moves upon said rack-bars (J, said bars unitedly forming a rack, which holds the clothes down to be acted upon by the rubbingstrips a and 0 To place the clothes under the said rack-bars the lever O is drawn back and the bars, together with the rubber O, tilted up and held as long as desired. When the clothes are placed in position, the rackbars and rubber C are lowered by the same means and the said rubber reciprocated. The water circulates between and around the strips or ribs a and c and the clothes washed in substantially the same way as when an ordinary ribbed wash-board is used.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, substantially as described, of the washing-box having fixed tran s- Verse rubber strips, the reciprocating rubber frame provided with similar rubber strips and having its end pieces mortised, the transverse strips a secured at the ends of the box and extending above the rubber strips, the rackframe having a central cross-piece and longitudinal bars extending through the mortises of the rubber frame and resting at their ends on the transverse strips a and a handle and connecting-rod for reciprocating the rubber frame.
