To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PRESLEY CHESHIER, a citizen of the United Stat-es, and a resident of Excelsior Springs, in the county of Clay and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oatarrh Remedies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a medical compound for the treatment of catarrh of the nose, head, throat, lungs, and stomach, and which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
My medical compound consists of the following ingredients combined in the proportions stated, viz: rain-Water, one gallon; sulphate of zinc, four ounces; nitrate potassa, four ounces, and juice of elderberries, four ounces. The last three ingredients having been added to the rain-Water in the proportions above given, the whole is shaken until Well mixed, and is then let stand for forty minutes, after which it is strained and bottled, when it is ready for use.
This medicalcompound when prepared in substantially the proportions and in the manner above stated Will form a perfect and reliable treatment for catarrh of the nose, head, throat, lungs, and stomach. It is to be used internally and externally, as the nature of each case may demand, being adapted both for internal and topical use to meet the circumstances of all cases of catarrh.
The manner of using is as follows: \Vhen suffering from catarrh of the nose and head, the remedy is applied and inhaled from cotton swab until the affected parts are completely saturated, while for catarrh of the throat, lungs, and the stomach fifteen or twenty drops are taken immediately before retiring for the night until cured. The juice of elderberries is full strength, just as it comes from the berries, and is only used for giving color to the compound.
I do not claim the use of elderberries and saltpeter, broadly; but claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A- medical compound for the treatment of catarrh, consisting of rain-Water, sulphate of zinc, nitrate potassa, and juice of elderberries, in substantially the proportions specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
