COVER-FASTENER FOR VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,834, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed November 7, 1888. Serial No. 290,227. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB H. OAssIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth. and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fastening Covers on Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing my improved fastening device as applied to a pail, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device released from the cover of the pail.
The present invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, cheap, and efficient sealing or fastening device for the covers of all classes of vesselssuch as packing-buckets, cans, pails, jars, barrels, boxes, pans, crates, the; and the invention consists in a device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a pail or bucket provided with the usual cover, B, this class of vessels being shown to illustrate the application of my invention, and therefore I desire it to be. fully understood that the device is not confined to any particular form of vessel, as it is equally applicable to all classes provided with a detachable cover or stopper.
To the sides of the pail A, I hinge in any well-known manner the bails O, which are constructed of wire and bent to form loops o The cover B at its center is provided with a staple, b,over which pass the loops a, when the bails are brought down upon the cover to fasten it over the top of the pail, after which a key is engaged with the staple above the loops to securely lock the bails in place. There may be many forms of keys usedsuch as a wedge-shaped key or a split ring. (Shown at D, Fig. 1.)
I do not desire to confine myself to any special form of device to be used as a key for engaging with the staple b, as any well-known means may be employed to lock the bails in place and to the staple.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a vessel provided with hinged bails having loops, of a cover provided with a staple for engagement of the loops, and a key to engage with the staple for holding the loops thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth."
2. The combination, with a vessel having hinged bails with loops, of a cover having a staple and a key for engagement therewith, consisting of a split ring, substantially as and for the purpose specified,
I11 testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB H. CASSIDY.
