MACHINE FOR BENDING METAL SASH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,683, dated March 19, 1889..

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLARD F. MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Machine for Bending Metal Sash, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion has for its object the construction of a machine for bending in curved and circular form I-shaped metal sash for sectional glass-work, substantially as below described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation; Fig. 2, an end elevation looking from a point at left of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, enlarged details of a portion of the machine.
Referring to the lettered parts of the draw ings, A is a frame, to the block 0 of which a jaw, B, is attached. This jaw has a convexed end, as at S, Figs. 2 and 3. To this jaw 13 is pivoted at z a jaw, D, having a concaved end-that is, the meeting ends of the jaws or the lips of the jaws are on a curve. The I-shaped sash I is placed between these jaws, and by moving up and down the handle of the jaw D and pushing the sash along through the jaws it is bent in circular form, as indicated by the curved part in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The more firmly the jaws are set together the smaller the circle of the sash will be, and to this end, that the circle shall be of the desired size, an adjustable stop, u, is employed, which, in connection with the shoulders 011 the jaws of the device, where they are pivoted, limits the movement of the jaw D. The stop a is a screw screwed into the frame, and can be raised or lowered. In some instances the stop can be dispensed with, provided the operator is suificiently skillful to govern the pressure on the jaws.

Toggle e e connects the lever 00 of the clamp with the vertically-playing rod 1) b; or, rather, the part c of the toggle connects pivotally with said parts, and the part c is pivoted to the vertically-playing rod at one end and is pivoted to the frame at the other end, or, as here shown, to a projecting bracket from the frame. The rod is carried down against the resistance of spring 3, which spring is attached to the top of the frame A-or table and to said rod. Thus the. operator in bending the sash I, Figs. 3 and 4, from a straight to a curved or circular form inserts the sash between the jaws, sets the clamp by pressing his foot on the treadle I, and closes the jaws by bearing down on the handled end of jaw D. The clamp and jaws are then released, the sash pushed in a little farther, and the clamp and jaws brought to bear against the sash again, and so on'the operation is continued.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. The combination of a suitable frame or support, jaws pivoted to open and close and having their gripping ends curved, a clamp for clamping the sash on each flanged side, and means for operating said clamp, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a suitable support, the jaws having their gripping ends curved, said jaws mounted upon said supports, one of the jaws being pivoted to the other, the latter being stationary, a clamp on each side of the jaws for clamping the flanged sides of the sash, and an adjustable stop to limit the play of the movable jaw, substantially as set forth.
