Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J AMES LYON, OF MOTT HAVEN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 39,938, dated September 15, 1863.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs LYON, of Mott Haven, in the county of /Vestchester and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use acertaiu new and useful Improvement in Skates 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is an inverted plan of my said skate, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the fastening.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Skates have heretofore been made to attach upon the sole of a boot or shoe by slotted plates, and wedge-form blocks have also been used, but they were liable to be obstructed by snow, ice, and dirt, and to wear loose.
The nature of my said invention consists in dovetail blocks upon the skates taking dovetail seats in metallic plates secured to the sole of the shoe, which doveta-il seats are open from end to end so that they can easily be cleaned, or any obstruction removed by the act of attaching the skates, and the skates cannot wear loose.
In the drawings, a is the skate-runner, of any desired size or shape, made with the blocks b and c on the upper edge of the runner or upon projections rising above the runner part of the skate. These blocks are slightly wedge-shaped and dovetail, and take correspondingly-shaped recesses in the blocks d and e that are attached, respectively, to the heel and sole of the shoe. The skate it will be seen is attached by entering the blocks in the recesses, both beingtaperingdovetails and forcing the skate back. The Wedging of the metallic surfaces together is sufficient to keep the skate in place. A small bearing-plate may surround the base of the block c to take the sole of the shoe and form a more extended bearing for the same, and make the boot or shoe easier to the wearer, particularly where the sole is thin.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The dovetail recesses in the blocks d and e, open from end to end, in combination with the tapering dovetail blocks b and c on the skate a, as and for the purposes specified.
ln witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 17th day of December, 1862.
JAMES LYON.
