T. B. BISHOP.
GAR AXLE LUBRIGATOR.
No. 399.369. Patented Mar. 12, 1889.
Snom/Hoz. (Zjsk o/E. 33913 /\V\/J/ atto/014mm tra THOMAS BRIGI-IAM BISHOP, OF CLIFTON, NE7 JERSEY.
CAR-AXLE LUBRICATOR.
S?ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,369, dated March 12, 1889.
Application filed October 22, 1888. Serial No, 288,752. (No model.)
To all 1071.071?, 'it 71mg/ concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS l-IRTGIIAM BISHOP, a citizen ol the I'nited States ot' America, residing at ('lit'ton, in the eounty of Passaic and State ol` New Jersey, have in. vented certain new and useful Improven'ients in Oar-Axle Lubrioators, of which the following is a specification, reference being' had therein to the accompanying drawin My invention relates to an improved earaxle lubrieator, and it consists in certain details of construction and combinations ot parts, which will first be described in eonnection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure I of the drawings is a longitudinal section ot a car-axle box, the lubrieating-web and a portion olf the ear-axle being' shown in elevation. Y taken on the line .1.1', Fie'. l, the springl bei ng shown in elevatiml. Fig'. il is a detached perpeetive view oli' the web, the web-stretching' plate, and the spring in position with relation to each other.
In the drawings, A indicates a ear-axle box; B, the bearing, oi' usual construction, and (l the oar-axle.
D represents the web-siret ch iupr plate, made of metal. This plaie is ot' a width to fit the interior ot' the box, so as to avoid lateral movement therein. In the middle itis formed with a eoncavity, c, to Conform to the shape of the axle, and near each end it is slotted, as at s, for the passage therethrough ot the web,
the plate presenting' a broad fiat surface between the slots and the edges of the eoncav ity, as olea-rby seen in 1Figs. B and El.
E represents the web, which ma)v be of felt or other thick cloth, and it is of the full width of the part of the axle to be lubricated.
'Fie'. is a transverse section,
I make it continuous by joining the ends of the cloth, in order that when one portion be Comes worn the web may be turned around to present another wearirig-surface, several of and pressed down into the concavity, and then its ends are tioined. In this position the plate and web are placed in the axle-box. A I
coil-spring', S, rests on the bottom portion of the web and bears at it top against-the under side of the stretching-plate, in. this manner drawingl thc web smoothly over the concave and flat pori ions ol' the plate. Oil being' placed in the box will ascend through thc web by capillary attraction, and be evenly and continuously distributed over the entire portion of the axle requiring` lubrication.
As some axle-boxes are deeper than others, I make the spring' S of a length suitable for the deepest, and provide it with a hook, 71,tor hooking' up a number ot' the coils, so as to adjust 1-he spring' to the box in which it is to be used.
Having' thus described in v invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a car-axle lulnicator, the combination, with the axle-box and the axle therein, ol a stretching-plate having` a coneavitv in its top anda flat surface on cach side oif said coneavity, a continuous web passingoverthe top of said plate and the bottom of the box, the axle beariug'on that poriiouol. the web within the ooneavity in the plate, and a spring.` bearingl at the bottom on the web and at the top against the plate, whereb)v the web is kept smooth under the axle.
il. In a ear-axle lubrieator, the combination, with the axle-box and the axle therein, of a stretching'platc slotted, as described, and having' aconeavitv in its top and a. flat surface on eaeh side of said conca-vily, a continuous web passed through said slots and over the top ot' the plate, and also over the bottom of the box, the axle bearing' on that portion ol the web within the concavit),v in the plate, and a spring bearing at the bottom on the web and at the top against the plate, for the purpose stated.
In a car-axle lubrieator, the combination, with the axle-box and the axle therein, of a stretching-plate of the full width ot the interior ot' the box, slotted, as described, and having' a concavity in its top and a flat surface on cach side ot said coneavity, a continuous web, of the width of the part to be lu brioated, passed through said slots and over the top of the plate, and also over the bottom of the box, the axle bearing' on that portion IOO of the web within tho Conoavity in tho plain@ hook for hookingI up a nnmbol' of ibo Coils, and a sp1-ing bearing at tho bottom on tho tho said Spring pressing a1', tho bottom on the web and at the top against the platovheroby Web and at the top against. tho plato, as Set the Web is kopt straight and Smooth under i forth. 5 the axle. In testimony wbovoof I a'lx my sig-natur@ 15 4L. In a oar-axle lnlrnioaol', tho Combination 1n prosonoo oli' two wtnesso.
T. BRIGIIAM BTSUO'I.
A 7 wlth the box and axle, ot a strotolnngplaiio for the web, a. continuous web passing' over Vitnessos:
I the top of said plate and over tho bottom of \VM. XV. THOMPSON, Io the box, and a coil-spring provided with a Jos. NIKON.
