SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent: N0. 399,301, dated March 12, 1889.

Yourz and (/IH'ARLES ll. sntnrz, citizens of the lfnitied States, residing at Joseph, in the. T county of Luchanan and State of Missouri, have invei'itcd new and useful Improvements 2 in Ovens for Ya mr-Stovers, of which the following is a specification.
()ur invention relates to an improvei'nent in ovens for vapor-stoves; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of del vices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter and partieularlv pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyiug drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an oven embodyingour improvements, the door of the same being open. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudiiml sectional view of the same, showing the valves or dampers closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the valves or dampers open. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, partly in section, illusl trating a modification of the invention. l
A represents the rectangular outer shell of the oven, which is provided on one side with p an opening, B, and has a hinged door, (7-, to close the said opening. In the ends of the shell A. near the uppersidethereof, are made openings D. On the upper side of the oven are secured I handles E, by means of which the oven may be readily moved about. The bottom of the shell A has the large opening F, which is adapted to register with the holes in the vapor-stove when the oven is placed thereon.
G represents a bottom plate, which is sup ported upon horizontal cross-bars H, and extends from side to side of the shell A, at a suitable distance from the lower side thereof. The bottom plate, G, is made of sheet metal, l and its ends are bent to form flanges g. The length oi? the bottom plate, G, is such that a 1 space is left between the ends of the same and l the ends of shell A.
L represents the lining of the oven, which is made of a single piece of sheet metal havl ing its lower ends bent outwardly at' right angles to form flanges Ill, which are adapted to fit under the flange g of the bottom plate, so as to secure the said lining thereto.

5 The lower ends of the lining are then forced outward, so as to cause their flanges M to lock under the flanges g of the bottom plate. The length of the sheet of metal of which the linin is made is such that when the lining is located in the oven it is out of contact with the end walls and top of the oven, and the upperside of the lining is curved or arched, as shown.
This provides an uninterrupted line, which extends entirely around thelining of the oven between the same and end walls and top of the oven. In the sides of the lining, near the top of the same, are openings I, which are slightly below the level of the openings D in the ends of the shell.
'I\' represents a pair of dampers or valves or deflectors, which are hinged to the ends of the shell A at a point slightly belowtheopenings I). The length of the said valves or 5 dampers is equal to the width oi the oven, and
the free edges ot the said dampers or valves are adapted to come in engagement with the sides of the lining, as shown in Fig. 2, so asto close the lines at. points between the openings D and I. The said dampers or valves are also adapted to be opened and swung against the sides of the lining so as to cover the openings I.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The heat and products oii' combustion pass upwardly between 'the linings of the oven and the end walls thereof, and when the dampers 3, escape through the openings D into the outer air and only serve to heat the oven to a minimum degree. \Vhen the said dampers or lines are closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the heat and products of combustion pass upward in the fines, strike against the lower sides of said dampers or fines. and are deflected inwardly by the same and caused to enter theinterior The upper portion of the oven or shell through openings 1' in the top of the lining, and from thence pass outward through the openings D.
\Vhen the dampers are thus arranged, the oven will be heated to amaximum degree and caused to brown cakes, pics, or bread on botl sides at once.
In Fig. 4 of the accompanying drawings we have illustrated a modification of the invention in which we constructed the oven with an inclined rigid deflector, K, that is placed above the openings 1. The inclined deflector K may be secured either to the outer shell, A, or to the lining L, or to both, and it is designed to perform the function of a closed damper, and it directs the heat through the openings I into the oven and causes it to pass out through the openings 1 in the top of the lining L to the openings D, when the damper K, situated on the opposite side of the oven, is closed. \Vhen the damper K is open, the heat passes along that side of the oven and then out through the openings D, heating the oven to a minimum degree and browning the articles in the oven on the bottom.
.From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the present invention will readily be understood; and it is obvious that the passage of the heat may be regulated and controlled, and thepies, cakes, and the like be browned 'on the top and the bottom at will, which is a great desideratum.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. An oven for vapor-stoves having the out-er shell provided with openings D, the lining L, arranged within the outer shell and forming an intermediate space between it and adapted to open and close the intermediate space upon each side of the said lining L and cause the heat to pass into the oven through the side or around and over the top of the oven, substantially as described.
2. A portable oven having the shell A, provided with openings 1), the lining arranged within the'shell and having the openings I in its sides and the openings 1 in its top, and
the deli ectors hinged to the lining and adapted to open or close the intermediate space, and also the openings I, to cause the heat either to pass through said openings I or to pass around the top of the oven, substantially as described.
3. A portable oven having the shell A,provided with the openings D, the lining L, arranged within the oven. and having the openings I in its sides and the openings 1 in its top, and inclined deflectors arranged in the
