S'H EET-NI ETAL. LOCK-CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,239, dated March l2, 1889.
Application tiled January 24, 1889. Serial No. 297,399. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be. it known that I, CHARLES lll. BURGESS, n Citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the eonnty ot' Hartford and State of Conneoiient, have invented certain new and nset'nl Improvements in Sheet-Metab Loek-Crises, of which the following is d` specitice'ition.
)ly invention relates to improvements in sheetmetnl lock-cases; and the obj ects of my inventimi are to torni n simple and inexpensive lock-ense from sheet metal which shall be :it the sanne time both durable and eiticient.
ln the ziecon'qgnnying drawings, Figure l is a pers'ieeiivc view of my loclvease, showing the face-platte, the upper end ple-te, and the esp-plat e. Fig. 2 is n transverse section taken on the horizontal plane of the upper surface oll the top end plate, and Fig. $3 is aplan View showing n inodiliezttion.
The lock-ense shown in Figs. l and 2 is intended to be used for non-reversible latches by securing seid ense to the surface of the door. i designfttes the trice-plate, 5 the lockplate, (i the cnp-plate, 'T the rem' edge plate, and S S the top and bottoni end plates. 1 form the fnce-plnte i, the leek -plnte 5, and rear edge plete, 7, all in one piece of sheet metal, the faceplate -l and rear edge-plate, 7, being bent np troni the opposite vertical edges of the cap-plaie 5, ns shown. The top and bottom end pln'es, d, :tre set n little below the npper and above the lower edges of the lockplnte 5, and nre provided :it erich end, and preferably :it one edge, with tenons .l, which are inserted in eorrespondingly-shnped inortises in the parts Jr, 5, and 7, the tenons on the ends of the end plate, S, being riveted down and. entering, respectively, the tace-plate 4: and back edge plate, 7, as shown most clearly in Fig. 9, thereby binding snid parts firmly together. The ltenons 9, which enter mortises in the carp-plate, are also headed down 'for binding that edge of the end pla-tes to the capplate; but this is not essentiel, although prefbeing secured vupon the surface of the door,
ernble. The cap-platte ti is let into the side of the lock-ease nshort distance, as indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 2. Then thus constructed, the lock is particularly adapted Jfor in which ense bolts may pass through the lockcnse near one edge from the outside, two corners ot the cap-plate (i being cnt away, as at l0 l0, to permit the passage ot` sztid bolts, while the projecting selvage or edge of the taee- 5 plate which projects beyond the cap-platte side of the lock-oase nitty be provided with. screw-holes ll 1l, thro n gh which to pass screws in securing the face-plate edge of the lockca-se to the door.
In Fig. I have shown the same general construction, excepting that the edges ot the faceplate 4 and rear edge plate, 7, are iiush with the outer side of the cap-plate l?. The faceplate el, lock-plate 5, and rear edge plate, 65 7, are, as before. described, all 'formed by bending from one piece of metal, and the top and bottom end plates, S, are secured to the faceplate and rear edge plate by tenons and mortises, as before described. By making the carp-plate flush with the edges of the parts 4 and 7 on that side of the lock the case is adapted for e, reversible latch, end may be secured with either side against the surface of a door by bolts passing through the lock-case. 7 5
l claim as my invention- The herein-described sheetnietal lock-ease, consisting, essentially, of the face-plate lockphite 5, rem' edge plate, 7, all formed from a.- singlc piece of sheet drietal, a cap-plete, and 8o the top and bottom end pieces, 8 S, provided with tenons at each end, by means of which said top and bottom end plates are iirmly secured to the parts 4C and 7, substantially es described, and for the purpose specified.
CHAS. M. BURGESS.
