FREDERICK W. BARRETT, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
TALLY-SH EET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 899,235, dated March 12, 1889.
Application filed luguc' 24, 1888.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, FREDERICK \V. BAR- RETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring-field, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmpro vements in TallyShcets, of which the following is a specification, reference bein had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combined pollbook and tally-sheet, the objects of the invention being to combine in one book the followbig-described elements, viz First, the book is so constructed, creased for folding, ruled, and printed that when the tallysheet is lying opened out the total-column is in a directline with. the spaces of and immediately follows the tally-columns, and when the leaves of the book are folded for filling'outthe judges certificate, (which certifies to the number of votes cast for each candidate,) the total-column is between and in close proximity to the column headed Names of Persons Voted for, and the columns of the certificate-page that contain the names and numbers of votes; second, to provide the tally-sheet with a margin of considerable width beyond the totalcolumn, creasing the same vertically on the inner border-line of the total-column, so that the total-column 1nay,when the sheet is folded toward the column containing the names of persons voted for, be folded over to bring the inner edge in close proximity to and aligned with the columns containing the. names of persons voted for, and the certificate-leaf may be folded over in close proximity to the total-column, overlapping the margin aforesaid and pressing it down, thus preventing the displacement of the total-column and bringing the column containing the names of persons voted for, total-column, and certificate-page in close proximity, aligned and in immediate rotation, thus securing convenience and obviating liabilities to error in the certification of names.
YVith these objects in view my invention consists in a combined poll-book and tallysheet constructed, arranged, creased, ruled, and folded, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of the tally-sheet as opened out in posiserial No. 283,628. (No modelfl tion for the registration of votes cast for the candidates, the dotted lines representing the creases upon which the sheet is folded; Fig. 2, a like view showing the sheet as folded bYOlQWli-ll the totahcoluinn in close proximity to the column containing the names of persons voted for; Fig. 3, a like view showing the certificate-page as folded overlapping the margin of the tally-sheet, with its edge in close proximity to the total-column, thus bringing the column containin the names of persons voted for, total-column, and cer tilicate-pag'e in close proximity and in immediate rotation; Fig: i, a vertical cross-section on dotted line rnl ig. 1-, Fig: 5, a like section on dotted line y y, Fig. and Fig. (3, a like section on dotted line .2 2, Fig.
In poll-books and tally-sheets as heretofore constructed it has been necessary in making certification to the number of votes cast for each candidate to turn back the tally-sheet to ascertain the number of votes cast as each registration was made on the certificate-page, as it would, for example, be necessary if the votes cast were registered on the first page of an ordinary book and a certification was made on the next succeeding page.
My improved poll-book and tally-sheet consists chiefly of the main or principal tallysheet- A, supplemental tally-sheet B, (a portion of which only is shown in the drawings, it being like the principal tally-sheet, excepting that it is less extensive, it being used when there is insufficient room upon the main sheet A,) and certificate pages or sheet C, all constructed, combined, and arranged with aview to convenience, simplicity, and adaptability for tallying with accuracy and without error.
The principal tally-sheet A is ruled to form column 0,, which designates the ofiice of each candidate; column a headed Names of persons voted for, registering-columns or main body a which designates the number of votes cast, and total-column a The tally-sheet A is provided with a projected marginor holding-strip, D, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully explained. This tally-sheet A is creased, as illustrated by dotted lines 1, 2, 3, and i, for the purpose of folding to bring the parts of the sheet in the proper position for registration and certifica tion, as will be hereinafter fully described.
The supplemental tally-sheet B and certification-pages C are and may be of the usual construction with reference to ruling, lettering, numbering, &c. e
As will be noticed by reference to the drawings, Fig. 1, the outer edge of the total-column a terminates at apoint considerably remote from the outer edge of the tally-sheet A, thus forming a wide margin, 1), and that the inner boundary-line of the total-column is creased, so that it and the margin may be folded back upon the under side of the said tally-sheet A when it is desired to fold the said sheet over upon the crease or folding-line P, to thereby bring the inner line of the total-column on a line with the crease or folding-line 2, or right-hand boundary line of column (13 as will be neces sary when it is desired to record the number of votes cast upon the certifieatepage. To do this it is simply necessary to fold the sheet A over upon itself on folding-line 3 and fold the total-column and margin or holdingstrip back upon the under side of sheet A, which will bring the inner line of the totalcolumn a on a line with the outer or righthand edge of column a or column headed Names of Persons Voted for. After this has been aceoi'nplished, (the sheet being in the position illustrated in Fig. 2,) the supplemental tally-sheet l; is folded over upon the folding-line or crease 5, which crease is exactly central between the outer edge of the total-column a and the outer edge of the sheet 15, thus bringin the certificate-page C, which is printed upon the back of the supplemental tally-sheet B, with its inner edge directly aligned with the outer edge of the total-ooh umn a thereby covering all matter not needed in certifying to the number of votes cast,si1nply leaving column a, entitled For what Offices, column a entitled Names of Persons Voted for, column a, and designating total number of votes cast for each candidate and certificate-pages, exposed, the inner edge of the certificate-page overlapping the margin or holding-strip D and causin the total-column. to lie down flat, all of which obviates the liability of error, which might occur if it was necessary to turn the sheets or pages backward and forward when registering the total number of votes cast upon the certificatepages. 3y this construction it will be observed that by folding the pages as aforesaid the columns of the sheet from which the certification is taken are brought into the closest proximity and all other parts are covered, thus obviating any liability of error which might accrue from. exposure of other figures and columns not needed in certifying, thereby insuring accuracy and securing rapidity in recording candidate-votes upon the certificatepages.
It will sometimes be desirable to provide more than one crease for folding between the outer boundary-line, headed Names of Persons Voted for, and the inner boundary-line of the totalcolumn, as when a very long tally-sheet is required. Therefore I do not desire to limit myself to a single crease or folding-line, as before stated, as a plurality of creases might be formed and accomplish the same resultthat is to say, they will be of such number and such arrangement that in folding the sheet the inner boundary-line of the total-column may be brought on a line with and in close proximity to the column headed Names of Persons Voted for.
I claim a 1. An improved article of manufacture consistin g of a principal tally-sheet having columns a a main body a, and total-column a, and having a crease between the column a and the main page a and another crease between the column a and the main body a and one or more other creases in said body, whereby the sheet may be folded over to bring the crease 4 in proximity to the crease 2, so that the total-column will follow at the right, the column a bearing the phrase Names of Persons Voted for.
2. In a combined poll-book and tally-sheet, the principal tally-sheet A, consisting of the columns a (1?, main body a total-column a, and having the creases 2, 3, and Al, the one 2 being directly on a line with the outside border-line of column (1 the one l being ona direct line with the inner border-line of totalcolumn a, and the one 3 being directly central between the creases or folding-lines '2 and 4, whereby the sheet A may be folded over to bring the inner boundary-line of the total-column on a direct line with the outer boundary-line of column a or column headed Names of Persons Voted for, substantially as set forth.
3. The principal tally-sheet A, having the columns a, (0, a and a and creases or folding-lines 2, 3, and at, located as described, the column a" terminating at a point considerably remote from the outer edge of the sheet A to form a margin or holding-strip, D, in combination with certificate pages or sheets 0, to overlap the margin or holding-strip D when the tally-sheet is folded over to bring the total-column a in close proximity to the column (Rand hold the same pressed down, all substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, in a poll-book and tally-sheet, of the principal tally-sheet A, having the columns a, a", a, and a, the creases or folding-lines 2, 3, and 4, the ones 2 and 4 being located on a line with the outer and inner edges of the columns a and a, respectively, and the one 3 being central between the ones 2 and 4:, as and for the purpose described, and having the projecting margin or holding-strip D, the supplemental tally-sheet B, having the crease or foldingline 5 directly central between the outer ITO boundary-lineof001111111160 ofthesheetAwhen taken, all substantially as and for the purt-he same is folded over in close proximity to pose described. 1 column a? and the out-er edge of said sheet In testimony whereof I affixing, signaturein 1 and the certificate-page (1,.oreased and presence of two witnesses.
