ENGINE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 399,101, dated March 5, 1889.
3x Serialllo. 291,110. (Nomotlel.)
To tri/'Z 1117i om it may concern..-
Be it. known that l, JACOB XVEST, a citizen ol. the United States of America, residing at Bolivar, in the countyr of Wvestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engines; l and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and nsethe saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ot ret'- erence marked thereon, which forni a part-oi: this specification.
My invention relates loan improvement in steam-engines.
My invention consists grooved piston arranged in suoli manner that by means oli' one, two, or more feed-pipes the steam is admitted into the cylinder at, the larger end and comes in contact with the grooves ot' the piston, causing it to revolve at a very high rate of speed, and escapes at the smaller end.
-I have shown my preferred form of construction in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference are used to designate similar parts in the several views, and in whichl `igurc l is a side elevation. Fig. is a longitudinal vertical section et the saine. Fig. Il is a transverse vertical section on the line .if ai ol' lfg. Li.
A indicates the outer cylinder, the major part ol which is conical. The. outer surta-ec ot' the head A thereof is circular, and has a Iiange, A2, and a steam connecting branch or feed-opening, a. To the ila-nge A2 a head, B, is bolted. The feed-opening d communicates with au internal circular steam-passage, o', which has one or more ports, o?, opening therefrom into the interior ot' said outer cylinder or easing,
The smaller end di the cylinder A has an egress-port, o, to which a suitable pipe may be attached to convey the exhauststeam away from the cylinder. The inner chamber ot said cylinder is oil regular conical form, and a conical piston, C, fitted therein, having shaft-extensions c and c from each end thereof a cone-shaped eylinder in which is iitted a conical spirallyi et', upon which a power-transinitting pulley, C, is keyed. The two shaft-extensions have bearing in the ends of the outer cylinder, being surrounded by suitable packings or having starting-boxes.
The conical piston C is constructed with a series of spiral grooves, c2, which provide flanges er wings against which steam impiuges. The large' end of the piston has a plain surface, C?, which affords a stable base for the grooves, and at the same time does not deteriorate from the desired action of the piston, as said surface is in rear of the ingress port or ports a?. The piston is shorter than the interior chamber of the cylinder A, there by leaving a space between the end of the said piston and the inner surface ot the end wall of the cylinder, thus providing a chamber under the egress-port.- u. The said piston snugly tits within the cylinder, having only sut'licient spacey to allow it to have unretarded movement. The steam entering the ingress port or ports flows into the spiral grooves of the piston and against the projections l'ormed by said grooves. This force revolves said piston and the transmitting-pulley. The steam follows the grooves or exerts its pressure on the piston until the whole length ot the said piston is traversed thereby, or until it reaches the end space between the reduced part thereof and el the cylinder and escapes. 'ly this means a continuousrevolution sustained.
llavingthus described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Trotters llatent, is
l.. The combination, substantially as described, ol' the cylinder or casing having a Aconical chamber, lateral ingress and egress ports communicaiing, respectively, with the larger and smaller ends of said chamber, ahead to close the larger end of said chamliier, and a conical piston provided with spiral grooves terminating` near the larger end of the piston.
2. The combination, substantially 'as dcscribed, of a cylinder or casing provided with a conical chamber, an cduction-port opening laterally ironi the smaller end of the chainber, a circular steam-passage surrounding the larger end et the chamber and com n'iunicating therewith through one or more radial openings,
IOO
an ingress-port opening into said circular chamber, a removable head to Close the larger end 0f the Chamber, and a conical spil-ally- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
grooved piston mounted in the Chamber With JACOB TEST' 5 its shaft journaled in the heads of the cylin-` der and provided at its larger end beyond the ingress-ports With :L peripheral plain surface. l
